APERA INSTRUMENTS / LABSEN 853-S / AI3165

Pre-pressurized
for highly viscous samples.

LabSen 853-S is a non-refillable, pre-pressurized pH/temperature electrode for high-accuracy measurement of highly viscous samples such as coatings, syrups, resin and glue. Its pre-pressurized reference keeps electrolyte flowing outward through the junction, and a low-impedance S membrane gives fast response.

Listed operating envelope: pH 0–13 and electrode/sample temperature 0–100°C, retaining the narrower limits on Apera’s current US 853-S product page. Catalog AI3165. Apera warrants LabSen electrodes for six months from delivery.

Check the connector.

It carries a built-in 30 kΩ NTC temperature sensor on an RCA plug for automatic temperature compensation on Apera meters with BNC and RCA inputs, such as the PH700, PH850, PH8500, PH820, PH910 and PH9500. Apera notes they may not work with other brands’ meters because the thermistor might not be compatible.

What makes it work.

Pre-pressurized reference

Smooth electrolyte flow in viscous samples, so thick sample cannot work its way into the junction.

Low-impedance S membrane

Fast response while staying impact resistant.

Silver ion trap + temperature sensor

Stable reference potential and long service life, with a built-in sensor for ATC.

Check the specifications.

Operating envelope: pH 0–13 and electrode/sample temperature 0–100°C, retaining the narrower limits on Apera’s current US 853-S product page. Construction: body lead-free glass; glass membrane S-type, hemispherical; junction ceramic; reference electrolyte pre-pressurized gel KCl.

The full specification table is in the Product Specifications tab. The linked manual lists wider pH/low-temperature endpoints; this listing deliberately retains the narrower current US product-page pH 0–13 and 0–100°C limits. Temperature figures are electrode/sample ratings, not a complete-system rating. Use a meter and temperature-compensation method rated for the actual sample temperature; keep the meter body, cable connection and adapter within their own confirmed limits. Connector fit alone does not establish temperature or ATC compatibility.

Store it wet.
Keep it clean.

Keep the tip in its cap with 3M KCl storage solution whenever it is not measuring.

Never store a pH electrode in pure, deionized or distilled water.

It is sealed and needs no refilling.

Apera’s manual advises avoiding strong acid and strong alkali solutions and dehydrating media such as absolute ethanol or concentrated sulfuric acid; if exposure is unavoidable, keep immersion short and clean the electrode carefully afterward.

Rinse with distilled or deionized water between samples. For stubborn deposits, use Apera electrode cleaning solution, then recondition and recalibrate.

Calibrate with fresh pH 7.00, pH 4.00 and pH 10.01 buffers.

LabSen 853-S buyer questions

What is the LabSen 853-S made for?

LabSen 853-S is a non-refillable, pre-pressurized pH/temperature electrode for high-accuracy measurement of highly viscous samples such as coatings, syrups, resin and glue.

Will the BNC/RCA version work on another brand’s meter?

The pH signal uses BNC, but the built-in 30 kΩ NTC temperature sensor is not universally compatible. Apera lists meters with matching BNC/RCA inputs; verify the meter’s thermistor support and temperature range before relying on ATC.

Is it refillable?

No; it is sealed and needs no refilling.

How should I store it?

Keep the tip in its cap with 3M KCl storage solution whenever it is not measuring. Never use pure, deionized or distilled water.

What warranty applies?

Apera warrants LabSen electrodes against defects in material and workmanship for six months from delivery. Accidental damage, improper use and normal wear are excluded.

Why does the manual show a wider pH or temperature range?

Apera’s exact 853-S manual lists pH 0–14 and −5–100°C, while its current US product page lists pH 0–13 and 0–100°C. This listing deliberately uses the narrower current-page limits. The electrode temperature rating does not extend your meter’s own temperature or ATC limits.

Is 853-S the same choice as 853-H for strong alkali?

No. The 853-S uses a low-impedance S-type membrane for viscous samples; 853-H uses HA glass for alkaline applications. The 853-S manual advises avoiding strong acids, strong alkalis and dehydrating media such as absolute ethanol or concentrated sulfuric acid. Do not treat the similar model names as interchangeable chemical-use ratings.

How should I clean coatings or syrup from the tip?

Rinse with distilled or deionized water before and after measurements. For stubborn contamination, follow the 853-S manual’s cleaning procedure, then recondition in 3M KCl and recalibrate. Cleaning water is not storage solution; keep the sealed electrode in 3M KCl when not measuring and do not try to refill it.

Confirm the exact configuration before ordering.

Check the connector and catalog number (AI3165) against your meter and samples, then return to the live price and ordering controls.
