An adhesive film seals once. A silicone mat seals, reseals, and comes off clean. Each well plug presses into its well for an airtight, liquid-tight fit that stops evaporation, cross-contamination, and aerosols, and the perforations close back up after a pipette tip or needle passes through.
Pick your mat format in the first menu by well count, shape, and diameter to match your plate, then choose your version: OptiWell™ or ILP, cross or line perforation, pre-slit, PTFE-coated for solvents, printed or non-printed, sterile or non-sterile.

Why Labs Choose These Sealing Mats
Airtight Fit Molded plugs press into each well to stop evaporation and cross-contamination.
Self-Sealing Perforations Cross (+) or line (–) perforations reseal after a tip or needle passes through.
Pre-Slit Options Pre-cut openings for easy pipetting and fewer mis-injections on autosamplers.
PTFE-Coated Options An inert PTFE face for volatile solvents and chromatography work.
No Adhesives Nothing to leach into samples; no residue on the plate.
Clean and Reusable RNase/DNase- and pyrogen-free; OptiWell™ mats are autoclavable and rated −40 to 80 °C.
How to Choose
1. Match the Wells
Count & shape: 24, 48, 96, or 384; square or round
Diameter: Match the mat plug to your plate's well opening
Tip: Square and round mats are not interchangeable
2. Pick the Access
Cross (+) / Line (–): Scored; pierce as needed, reseals
Pre-Slit: Already cut; easiest for tips and autosampler needles
Septa: PCSEPTA-9-N for ABI 3100 sequencing plates
3. Pick the Face
Silicone: General storage, incubation, and automation
PTFE-Coated: Volatile solvents, LC/MS, and chromatography
Sterile: OptiWell™ mats in every format
4. Printed or Bulk
Printed: Alphanumeric grid for fast orientation
Non-printed bulk: ILP 100/cs for high-volume use
Tip: OptiWell™ packs are 50 mats
PTFE-Coated and Pre-Slit Mats for Autosamplers
Solvents attack bare silicone, and autosampler needles can core a solid mat. ILP PTFE-coated mats put an inert layer between the silicone and your sample, and the pre-slit versions let needles and tips pass without coring or pushing the mat into the well.
They come in square and round 96-well formats from Ø5.51 mm PCR plugs to Ø8.5 mm deep-well plugs, printed in blue for easy reading.
Mats for Every Plate We Carry
Use the well shape and diameter to match a mat to your plate. Square 2 mL plates take square mats; round-well plates take round mats sized to the well opening; PCR plates take the Ø5.3–5.7 mm mats.
Press the mat down with a flat hand or a plate roller until every plug is fully seated, working from one corner to the opposite corner. To reuse OptiWell™ mats, wash in 10% bleach, rinse with ethanol, and let them dry. For single-use sealing, see our adhesive sealing films and foils.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these a good alternative to Axygen® or Thermo Scientific™ Nunc™ silicone sealing mats?
Yes, for most applications. They are silicone and PTFE-coated silicone mats in 24-, 48-, 96-, and 384-well formats, with scored, pre-slit, and septa options. Match the well shape and diameter to your plate. Axygen®, Thermo Scientific™, Nunc™, and Applied Biosystems™ are trademarks of their respective owners; Blue Tiger Scientific is not affiliated.
What do the cross (+) and line (–) perforations mean?
They are the two styles of scored opening MTC Bio offers. Both let a tip or needle pass through and then reseal; choose the one your protocol or autosampler prefers.
When should I choose a PTFE-coated mat?
Choose PTFE when samples contain volatile or aggressive solvents, or for LC/MS and chromatography. The PTFE face keeps the sample off the silicone.
What is the difference between scored and pre-slit?
Scored mats are perforated but closed until pierced. Pre-slit mats are already cut through, so tips and needles pass with less force and less risk of coring.
Can I reuse the mats?
Yes. OptiWell™ mats are autoclavable and can be cleaned with a 10% bleach wash and an ethanol rinse. PTFE-coated ILP mats are also reusable and autoclavable.
Which mat fits ABI 3100 plates?
PCSEPTA-9-N is a 96-well silicone septa mat for ABI 3100 sequencing plates. Confirm the fit with your instrument manual.
