APERA INSTRUMENTS / SX711 / AI460
SX711 pairs a compact handheld meter with the 201T-S pH/temperature electrode, three pH buffers and a carrying case. Automatic temperature compensation, a stability indicator and manually saved readings support routine aqueous testing. The mV mode shows the pH electrode’s raw potential; measuring sample ORP requires a separate compatible ORP electrode.
Choose AI460 when pH is the main job and you want replaceable-probe serviceability, selectable calibration series and local recall without a computer workflow. The supplied 201T-S uses one locking 8-pin plug. This is not a BNC 211 kit, a conductivity meter or an included pH/ORP two-probe bundle.
Each card opens that model page. Match the supplied electrode and documented sample method. pH, ORP, conductivity and polarographic dissolved oxygen are different measurements. Match the parameter and meter format before comparing accessories; optional items are not supplied unless the exact kit list says so.

The backlit LCD displays pH, temperature, calibration-range icons and a smile symbol when the reading settles. M+ identifies a saved measurement and RM identifies recalled data. These prompts help an operator follow a repeatable sequence, but do not prove that the buffer is uncontaminated, the electrode is appropriate or the sample has equilibrated.
With the supplied pH electrode connected, changing from pH to mV reveals the potential used to calculate pH. That is useful when investigating response or calibration problems. It does not turn the pH glass membrane into a platinum ORP sensor. The exact SX711 manual separately identifies the 301Pt-S, AI1315, as an optional ORP electrode.
The stock 201T-S is a general-water electrode with a ceramic junction, Ag/AgCl reference and gel electrolyte. The SX711 manual lists AI7103, an optional 8-pin to BNC/RCA converter, for compatible alternatives. It is not included. Verify the exact electrode, temperature sensor and adapter combination before buying a specialist LabSen probe; neither the connector nor the menu establishes universal compatibility.
Take repeatable pH observations from compatible process-water samples or rinse stages. Record the location and temperature separately, rinse between vessels and allow enough time for stabilization. A pH result alone does not establish contaminant identity, drinking-water suitability or compliance with a treatment specification.
Use pH to follow changes in nutrient solutions or culture water when sample chemistry suits the supplied sensor. Keep standards fresh and avoid carrying nutrient residues back into buffer bottles. Conductivity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentration are not measured by this kit; arrange separate instruments where those parameters matter.
The CAL and memory controls make preparation, stabilization and recordkeeping visible steps. Comparing pH with raw mV can help explain electrode behavior. If a calibration error persists, inspect the sensor and connectors, confirm buffer-series selection and use the manual’s troubleshooting sequence rather than repeatedly accepting an unstable reading.
Connect the 201T-S with the notch aligned to the meter socket. Push straight in while holding the metal ring, then tighten that ring. Do not rotate the black rubber cable sleeve. Remove the storage bottle without spilling its KCl, rinse the tip with distilled or deionized water, and gently remove excess rinse water without rubbing the glass membrane.
For the supplied USA buffers, begin with pH 7.00. Press CAL, immerse the electrode, stir briefly and hold it still. Wait until the stability symbol stays on, then confirm as directed by the manual. Rinse between solutions and continue with pH 4.00 and pH 10.01 for three-point calibration. Use fresh, separate portions and never return used buffer to the original bottle.
The meter supports one, two or three calibration points. Select buffers that bracket the expected samples; a new pH electrode requires three-point calibration. The USA set lists 1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01 and 12.45; NIST lists 1.68, 4.01, 6.86, 9.18 and 12.45. A China series is also selectable. The current page’s “13 kinds” wording describes recognition, not thirteen calibration points or thirteen included bottles. Match the selected series to the actual bottle labels.
Rinse the 201T-S before and after each measurement, then return it to its cap with enough Apera 3M KCl storage solution to cover the sensing tip. Pure water is appropriate for rinsing, not for storing this pH electrode. Keep the bottle upright and renew contaminated storage solution. The gel reference electrolyte is not user-refillable.
The current 201T-S page specifies 0 to 13 pH and 0 to 60°C, while its PDF specifies 0 to 14 pH and 0 to 80°C. Treat the narrower current-page limits as the buying guide and confirm demanding applications before ordering. The PDF additionally cautions against prolonged use above 50°C, frequent strong acid or alkali measurements, low-ionic-strength water and liquids that attack the polycarbonate housing. A wide meter display does not remove those probe limitations.
Clean according to the exact electrode guide, using a treatment suitable for the contamination rather than abrasive scrubbing. Rehydrate and recalibrate after cleaning. Keep plugs dry, clean and protected when disconnected. The IP57 rating is an enclosure protection specification, not a promise that an exposed connector or glass sensing bulb can tolerate immersion, drops, solvents or unrestricted chemical exposure.
Use the physical controls for measurement, calibration and the documented record functions. Check units, temperature, calibration indicators and the selected parameter before assigning a result to a sample. Screen values in photographs are illustrative, not sample results. The model-specific record and output workflow is explained below.
Follow the exact parameter-specific calibration procedure, using the required standard, solution or calibration atmosphere. Temperature compensation does not make different sample temperatures, preparation methods or chemistry equivalent. Follow the model-specific meter and electrode instructions before extending the method to a new sample.
The current SX711 page specifies 200 stored sets, and the v3.0 manual’s specification table agrees. However, its data-saving paragraph says 400. This listing uses the current 200-set specification rather than silently treating the larger manual statement as an upgrade. If capacity is decisive, obtain confirmation for the supplied instrument before purchase.
A short press of the memory key saves a stable reading; a long press enters recall. Browse records on the display and transfer required results to a worksheet before clearing them. Record content is the serial number, value, unit and temperature. The manufacturer calls this data logging, but the documented operation is operator-triggered storage, not automatic recording at a chosen interval.
No real-time clock, dated record, USB connector, export software, Bluetooth or phone-app workflow is documented in the exact SX711 sources. Auto power-off and backlight timers are operating conveniences, not logging intervals. Preserve sample identity, time, calibration history and operator notes separately; internal recall is not a validated electronic audit trail.
Alternative format: Apera PH8500 Portable pH Meter Kit with 201T-F Electrode and USB Data Logging. The linked meter uses a different measurement format, supplied probe set or record workflow; compare its exact kit rather than assuming probe interchangeability. Compare the exact supplied sensors, measurement parameter, accessories and data features rather than assuming similar model names mean identical kits.
No. AI460 includes the 201T-S pH/temperature electrode. The exact manual identifies 301Pt-S, AI1315, as separately sold for ORP. The pH electrode’s mV reading is raw pH-electrode potential, not sample ORP.
No. The supplied 201T-S has an 8-pin connector. AI7103 BNC/RCA conversion is optional, subject to exact-electrode compatibility, and is not in the kit.
One to three calibration points are supported. Three 50 mL buffers are supplied: 4.00, 7.00 and 10.01. Recognition of additional USA, NIST or China values does not mean thirteen-point calibration.
Do not assume so. The current 201T-S page limits the probe to 0 to 13 pH and 0 to 60°C, with additional sample restrictions; its PDF lists wider ranges. Meter electronics and supplied-probe limits are different.
The current SX711 page and manual specification table say 200. One manual save-data paragraph says 400. Use 200 as the current published capacity and ask for unit-specific confirmation if required.
No timed interval recording, clock stamps or USB export is documented for SX711. Save and recall readings manually, and keep the timestamps and sample labels in a separate worksheet.
No ORP temperature-compensation function is documented. For optional ORP measurements, the check solution’s expected mV changes with temperature; the manual provides a temperature table. Do not transfer pH ATC claims to ORP.
The current US SX711 page and its exact v3.0 manual specify 36 months for the instrument and six months for the electrode from delivery. The limited warranty covers qualifying defects attributable to Apera. Exclusions include accidental damage, normal wear, improper use or storage, transport damage, failure to follow instructions, unauthorized repair or modification, and other stated external causes. This is not a probe-life guarantee.
