pH in organic solvents
and non-aqueous samples.

Measure pH in organic-solvent applications with the refillable Apera LabSen 871. Its robust PHY glass membrane, double-junction reference and movable sleeve support stable measurements in suitable non-aqueous samples. The electrode has a BNC connector and no built-in temperature sensor. Select the electrolyte and measurement procedure for your solvent class; water-immiscible samples use the prescribed water-extraction method.

Measurement range: pH 1–13. Electrode temperature range: 0–80°C. Use a compatible meter and temperature-compensation method within their respective limits. Manufacturer part number: AI3147.

Check the connector.

Connect the BNC plug to a compatible pH meter. LabSen 871 has no built-in temperature sensor; use a separate temperature probe supported by your meter or manual temperature entry where available. Observe the meter and temperature probe limits as well as the electrode’s 0–80°C rating.

What makes it work.

PHY glass membrane

LabSen’s most robust membrane, protecting the hydrated gel layer from organic solvents.

Double junction, 1M LiCl

Outer movable-sleeve junction, nominally 1M LiCl; inner 3M KCl bridge; Ag/AgCl reference. Outer electrolyte selection is method-dependent, not universal for all solvents.

Blue gel inner electrolyte

Specially formulated to prevent air bubbles and extend service life.

Check the specifications.

LabSen 871 has a lead-free glass body, PHY membrane, Ag/AgCl reference and refillable outer bridge with a movable-sleeve junction. The standard outer electrolyte is 1M LiCl; the inner bridge uses 3M KCl. Choose the outer electrolyte according to the measurement method.

The full specification table is in the Product Specifications tab.

Store it wet.
Keep it clean.

Choose the method for your solvent. The full LabSen 871 manual specifies 1M LiCl outer electrolyte for water-miscible solvents. For water-immiscible solvents, it specifies 3M KCl outer electrolyte and measurement of the separated water extract. Follow the complete preparation and calibration procedure in the linked manual.

Never store the electrode in pure, deionized or distilled water.

Keep the refill opening unplugged during measurement. Follow the manual’s emptying and rinsing procedure when changing electrolyte. For storage longer than 24 hours after using 1M LiCl, empty that electrolyte and soak the tip in 3M KCl storage solution as directed.

Clean according to the sample and full manual. After solvent cleaning, rinse promptly with purified water, recondition in 3M KCl for at least one hour and recalibrate. Use a chemically compatible sample container; solvents such as toluene can attack polycarbonate. Follow the laboratory’s solvent handling and ventilation procedures.

LabSen 871 buyer questions

What is the LabSen 871 made for?

Organic-solvent methods, with different workflows for water-miscible and water-immiscible samples. The full LabSen 871 manual uses 1M LiCl for miscible solvents, but 3M KCl plus a separated water-extract method for immiscible solvents; it does not prescribe a single direct-test LiCl workflow for all solvents.

Is it refillable?

Yes. Refill the outer bridge with the electrolyte required by your method: the full manual specifies 1M LiCl for water-miscible solvents and 3M KCl for the water-extract method used with water-immiscible solvents. Follow its emptying/rinsing procedure when switching; do not confuse the refill electrolyte with external storage solution.

How should I store it?

For storage longer than 24 hours after using 1M LiCl, The LabSen 871 manual says to empty the LiCl outer electrolyte and soak the tip in 3M KCl storage solution. Follow the full emptying procedure and follow the full procedure. Never store it in pure, deionized or distilled water or leave it in the sample.

What warranty applies?

Apera warrants LabSen electrodes against defects in material and workmanship for six months from delivery. Accidental damage, improper use and normal wear are excluded.

Can I measure neat toluene or hexane directly?

Do not assume so. For water-immiscible solvents, the full LabSen 871 manual prescribes 3M KCl outer electrolyte and measurement of a separated water extract. The result belongs to that extraction method, not an unqualified direct pH measurement of the neat solvent. Confirm the applicable procedure with Apera and your laboratory before testing.

Does LabSen 871 include temperature compensation?

No temperature sensor is built in. It uses BNC for the pH signal; automatic temperature compensation requires a separate probe supported by your meter. The electrode is rated 0–80°C, but the meter and any temperature probe may have narrower limits.

How do I clean solvent residues?

Use the solvent-specific procedure in the full 871 manual. A water rinse is suitable after water-miscible samples; immiscible residues may need a compatible solvent cleaner with ventilation. Rinse promptly with distilled/deionized water after solvent cleaning, recondition in 3M KCl for at least one hour and recalibrate.

Can I use the plastic vial with every solvent?

No. The full LabSen 871 manual warns that solvents such as toluene can attack polycarbonate and recommends a compatible glass container that allows a sealed test. Check the sample-container materials and your laboratory method; the electrode’s glass body does not guarantee compatibility of every accessory.

Confirm the exact configuration before ordering.
