A portable soil kit with a nonrefillable spear electrode and USB records.
APERA INSTRUMENTS / PH8500-SL / AI5553
PH8500-SL pairs the portable PH8500 meter with the LabSen 553 spear pH/temperature electrode for moist soil and prepared slurries. Choose its pointed glass sensor when a conventional liquid-testing bulb is unsuitable. It is not a metal digging probe.
Moisture, preparation and sampling location determine what a soil reading represents. Direct-contact results are not automatically interchangeable with laboratory extraction results.
Each card opens that model page. Match the supplied electrode and documented sample method. Different configurations are not interchangeable upgrades, and optional accessories are not supplied unless the exact kit contents say so.

Refillable LabSen 213; 3M KCl for reference refill and storage.
AI5553
Moist soil samples
LabSen 553 glass spear; distinguish direct and slurry methods.
AI5562
Wetted surface contact
LabSen 373 flat glass and PTFE ring must both contact the wet sample.
LabSen 553 combines a PVC body, spear-shaped glass membrane and open plus ceramic junctions. Its Long-Life AgCl/silver reference uses polymer electrolyte. The reinforced construction does not make the exposed glass a blade, drill or unbreakable soil tool.
The integrated sensor connects through RCA, while BNC carries pH/mV. Use both connections for temperature measurement and automatic compensation. Compensation corrects electrode response; it does not make wet and dry soils equivalent or remove sample-temperature effects.
Save up to 500 sets manually or at timed intervals. The meter clock adds date and time to readings, with temperature and calibration information available for review. Check the clock before starting a new sampling run.
Check suitable moist soil around crops or nursery plants using a consistent contact procedure. Prepare a pathway first and stop if the electrode meets resistance. Keep roots, stones and the sampling tool away from the glass tip.
Compare locations only after defining moisture condition, sampling position and preparation. Take several measurements rather than treating one contact point as the entire area. Record any added water because that preparation changes the test conditions.
Use a documented soil-to-water ratio, mixing sequence and settling time when a slurry is the better method. The electrode manual includes a 20 g soil to 100 g water procedure; other protocols can produce different results.
Remove the storage cap, rinse the probe and perform at least a two-point calibration before first use. Begin with the neutral buffer for the selected series, then bracket the expected sample. Keep calibration portions clean and separate from the original bottles.
The soil must be moist enough for electrical contact. Dry soil needs controlled moistening or a defined slurry method. For hard or stony material, prepare the sample or choose a different sampling approach rather than pushing harder. A dibber is a separate preparation tool.
Predrill a clear pathway, then seat the probe gently so the sensing end contacts the prepared soil. Wait for a stable reading before saving. No universal insertion depth is promised: the electrode has a short exposed tip, and hole depth is not allowable glass insertion depth.
LabSen 553 is nonrefillable. Do not add KCl to its internal polymer reference. External 3M KCl storage solution serves a different purpose: keeping the sensing membrane hydrated and the junction ready between uses.
Rinse away soil after each reading, using a soft brush if necessary without loading the glass tip. Return the clean probe to its 3M KCl storage cap. Replace dirty storage solution; distilled or deionized water is for rinsing, not long-term storage.
Keep connectors clean and dry. Inspect the tip around difficult samples, and recalibrate when needed. A separate storage-solution bottle, dibber, containers and preparation equipment are method or maintenance supplies, not promised kit contents.
Use the physical meter controls for measurement and calibration, then record or save a stable result. A held display and a stored record are different functions. Screen values in photographs are illustrative, not measurements of your sample.
Choose the correct buffer family and calibration points for the intended work. Temperature compensation addresses electrode response; it does not make different sample temperatures, preparation methods or chemistry equivalent. Follow the exact probe instructions before extending the method to a new sample.
The PH8500 can retain up to 500 sets with date, time, measurement value, unit, temperature and the last calibration record. Manual saving follows a stable indication. Timed logging can be configured from one minute to 99 hours 59 minutes. Keep the clock and sample identification procedure consistent; deleting stored values cannot be undone.
The current Web PC-Link workflow uses USB with a compatible desktop Chrome or Edge browser on Windows or Mac. It supports CSV output and browser-print reporting. Check the exact instructions and connection before relying on a field data workflow; do not assume Firefox, Bluetooth or ZenTest support.
When connected to PC-Link, new records go to software rather than meter memory. Export and back up important records before closing the tool. This does not establish automatic permanent backup, an immutable audit trail, electronic signatures, regulatory compliance or guaranteed background operation.
Alternative configuration: Apera PH8500 general-water kit with 201T-F. That kit supplies a different electrode. Choose the sample-facing sensor and method rather than treating a common meter body as universal sample compatibility.
No. Dry soil does not provide the required contact and can damage the probe. Moisten consistently or prepare a slurry, and make a pathway before contact. Never use the glass spear to break hard soil or push past stones.
There is no universal insertion depth for every sample. The manual describes preparing a deeper pathway, but that is not a physical insertion rating for the short glass tip. Keep the contact gentle and follow your sampling protocol.
Not necessarily. Added water, soil-to-water ratio, extraction time and sampling position change the measurement conditions. Use one defined procedure for comparisons and identify the method in your records rather than combining unlike results.
No. The LabSen 553 uses a nonrefillable polymer reference. Keep its outside sensing end in 3M KCl between sessions, but do not treat that storage liquid as an internal refill instruction.
The meter displays -2.00 to 16.00 pH, but LabSen 553 is rated 0 to 14 pH and 0 to 80°C. Neither the broader display nor automatic compensation extends those electrode limits or guarantees suitability for every chemical matrix.
Connect by USB to Web PC-Link using desktop Chrome or Edge on Windows or Mac. Export CSV or use the browser print workflow. New connected readings go to software instead of meter memory, so export before closing. This is not Bluetooth logging.
PH8500, LabSen 553, three calibration solutions, USB cable, software flash drive, screwdriver, manual and fitted case. The probe provides its own temperature sensing. Buffer volumes, loose batteries and extra KCl are not promised here.
The limited warranty covers the instrument for three years and the probe for six months from delivery, subject to its terms. Accidental breakage, improper use, storage issues and normal wear are excluded; the spear is not warranted as a digging implement.
Review PH8500-SL AI5553 against the sample, supplied electrode and documented method. Return to the live price and ordering controls when the configuration fits your work.
Apera Manufacturer Limited Warranty
Apera states a limited three-year warranty for the instrument and a six-month warranty for the supplied probe from delivery, for defects attributable to the manufacturer and subject to its stated conditions.
Normal wear, accidental damage, improper use, transport or storage damage, failure to follow instructions, unauthorized repairs or modifications and other external causes are excluded. Keep the exact product and purchase details when requesting service.
Use the common meter instructions for meter operation and the exact electrode instructions for its contact, cleaning and storage method. Generic base-kit packing lists do not establish specialty-kit contents. Each card opens a verified PDF in a new tab.
