Frequently Asked Questions

Are these an alternative to Nalgene Unwire test tube racks?

They serve the same job with different specifications. Thermo Scientific Nalgene Unwire polypropylene racks 5976-0013 (13 mm) and 5976-0016 (16 mm) hold 72 tubes in a 6 × 12 array, are molded in one piece and are stated by Thermo Fisher to be not autoclavable. MTC Bio R1115 holds 90 tubes 12–14 mm and R1117 holds 60 tubes 15–17 mm; both snap together from a flat pack and are autoclavable. Position count and footprint differ, so do not assume an identical layout. Trademarks belong to their respective owners; comparison does not imply endorsement, affiliation or common manufacturing origin.

Can R1115 replace a Nalgene 13 mm rack such as 5976-0013?

For 12–14 mm tubes, R1115 can serve the same purpose with 90 positions instead of 72. It is not identical: the footprint and array differ (6 × 15 versus 6 × 12), and R1115 is autoclavable while the Nalgene polypropylene Unwire rack is not. Check bench space and any automation or labeling layout before switching.
