Snap-Cap Culture Tubes for Aerobic and Anaerobic Work

One cap, two jobs. The polyethylene cap on these tubes seats in two positions: up and loose so aerobic cultures can breathe, or pushed down for an airtight, liquid-tight seal for anaerobic cultures and storage.

Pick your tube size in the first menu, then material and packing in the second. Choose clear polystyrene or tough polypropylene, sterile with caps attached, individually wrapped, or uncapped in bulk with caps sold separately.

The 14 mL Tube for Overnight Cultures

The 17 × 100 mm tube is the standard for overnight bacterial cultures and miniprep starters. Set the cap in the up position so the culture gets air while shaking, then press it down for spinning or storage.

Choose polypropylene if you will centrifuge at up to 4,000 × g or need chemical resistance, or polystyrene for the clearest view of turbidity. Individually wrapped sterile tubes are available for single-tube use.

Uncapped Tubes and Separate Caps

Need tubes without caps, or caps on their own? The uncapped tubes come non-sterile in bags of 125, and matching low-density polyethylene caps are sold separately for each size.

Tip for Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Cultures

Seat the cap in the first, loose position for shaking aerobic cultures so air can exchange, and press it all the way down for anaerobic work or before centrifuging. For 12 × 75 mm tubes used in flow cytometry, see our FlowTubes™; for larger volumes, see our conical centrifuge tubes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these a good alternative to Falcon® or Fisherbrand™ snap-cap culture tubes?

Yes, for most applications. They are 12 × 75 mm (5 mL) and 17 × 100 mm (14 mL) tubes in polystyrene or polypropylene with two-position caps, sterile or non-sterile. Falcon® and Fisherbrand™ are trademarks of their respective owners; Blue Tiger Scientific is not affiliated.

What do the two cap positions do?

In the first, loose position the cap lets air exchange for aerobic cultures. Pressed fully down, it forms an airtight, liquid-tight seal for anaerobic cultures, centrifuging, or storage.

Should I choose polystyrene or polypropylene?

Polystyrene is crystal clear and rated 0 °C to 70 °C and 2,000 × g. Polypropylene is translucent, rated −190 °C to +120 °C and up to 4,000 × g, and more chemically resistant.

Are the uncapped tubes sterile?

No. Uncapped tubes (T8302, T8306, T8232, T8236) are non-sterile, bulk packed in bags of 125. Caps are sold separately.

Can I autoclave these tubes?

Polypropylene is rated to +120 °C. Polystyrene is rated only to 70 °C and should not be autoclaved.

How many tubes are in a case?

Most tubes ship 1,000 per case. The individually wrapped 14 mL tubes ship 500 per case.

    Shipping Policy

    Orders for MTC Bio products are fulfilled and shipped directly by MTC Bio using FedEx or UPS, with FedEx Ground as the default shipping method unless otherwise specified.

    • Expedited shipping options (2-Day, Overnight) are available at an additional cost.
    • MTC Bio only ships to residential or business addresses within the United States—no PO Boxes.
    • Orders placed after business hours, weekends, or holidays will be processed the next business day, pending product and carrier availability.
    • Shipping timelines may vary based on product availability, order size, and carrier logistics.
    • Blue Tiger Scientific and MTC Bio are not responsible for carrier delays, weather-related disruptions, or unforeseen delivery issues once the order has shipped.

    Return Policy

    If a return is necessary, customers must start the process with Blue Tiger Scientific before returning any products to MTC Bio.

    • All return requests must be initiated with Blue Tiger Scientific before shipping a product back to MTC Bio.
    • Customers must obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number from Blue Tiger Scientific before returning any item.
