MAJOR SCIENCE · MBE-300

A compact platform for seeing your gel

The Major Science MBE-300 is a slim blue-light transilluminator for observing appropriately stained gels. Its 470 nm LED source and included inclined amber filter provide a focused viewing setup without turning the purchase into a full imaging system.

Use it for direct gel observation or specify a compatible tank configuration for viewing during electrophoresis. The standalone unit keeps those choices separate: a tank, fan/filter lid, imaging hood and camera are not part of this base package.

What is included for direct viewing?

The standalone MBE-300 includes the blue-light transilluminator and the MBE-LID-AM580 inclined 580 nm amber filter. The filter is a supplied component, not an accessory you need to add simply to match the documented standalone configuration.

This is a viewing instrument rather than a camera-equipped documentation station. If image capture is part of your method, plan the camera or phone and any suitable hood separately; product photographs showing these items illustrate an added workflow.

Will your gel and tank fit the viewing setup?

The illuminated viewing area is 112 × 74.6 mm. Use that measurement when deciding how much of your gel you want to observe, rather than treating the entire body as an illuminated surface.

Major Science documents configurations with the MJ-105A and ME10 tanks. Check the tank clearance and the observation area you need for your own assembly, because these examples are not a universal fit guarantee for every electrophoresis tank.

What are the key physical and operating details?

The flat-bed aluminium-alloy body measures 86 × 170 × 25 mm and weighs approximately 338 g. Its low height and modest weight make it a compact component to position within a planned bench workflow.

The listed blue LED wavelength is 470 nm, with a 20 W light source and DC 12 V, 2 A power requirement. An automatic shutdown occurs after approximately six minutes, an operating detail to account for when planning observation sessions.

Which stains and observation tasks suit blue light?

Choose the MBE-300 for fluorescent gel stains whose excitation and emission requirements suit the 470 nm source and amber-filter viewing arrangement. Compatibility depends on the stain and protocol, not simply on whether a gel fluoresces under another light source.

Real-time viewing is a documented application when the illuminator is paired with a compatible tank configuration. It supports observation, but does not add a camera, analysis software or a guaranteed detection threshold to the standalone unit.

Should you choose the standalone unit or a package?

The standalone model is appropriate when you are specifying viewing hardware separately from electrophoresis equipment. Its included inclined filter is different from a tank-mounted amber lid with a fan, and a synthetic-paper hood is not included.

For a coordinated MJ-105A setup, the MJA-MBEP package combines the tank and MBE-300 with a fan/filter lid and hood. The MJAE-100P and MJAE-Mini300 packages additionally include an MP-100 or MINI-300 power supply respectively; these are distinct packages, not contents of the standalone MBE-300.

What should you check before routine use?

Check stain compatibility, tank fit and the accessories needed for your intended viewing or capture method before ordering. For an MJ-105A tank, the listed fan/filter lid is MJ-LID-AM580; other tank configurations have their own specified accessories.

Handle and clean the viewing surface and amber filter according to the manufacturer instructions. Blue excitation is not an assurance that no eye protection is needed: use appropriate filtering and follow your laboratory safety procedures for the complete setup.

Which blue-light viewing format fits your gel?

MBE-300 buyer questions

Is the amber filter included?

Yes. The standalone MBE-300 ordering specification includes the MBE-LID-AM580 inclined 580 nm amber filter. It is not the same item as a tank-mounted fan/filter lid.

What is the difference between the viewing area and the body size?

The illuminated viewing area is 112 × 74.6 mm. The manufacturer lists the body dimensions as 86 × 170 × 25 mm in W × L × H order. These describe different parts of the instrument and should not be substituted for one another.

Will it work with every fluorescent gel stain?

No universal stain compatibility is established. Match the stain excitation and emission requirements to the 470 nm blue source and amber-filter viewing setup, using your stain protocol as the starting point.

Can I observe a gel during electrophoresis?

Yes, real-time viewing is a documented use in compatible tank configurations. Major Science shows MJ-105A and ME10 combinations. The tank and any required tank-specific lid are separate from the standalone MBE-300.

Does it take photographs or analyse bands?

No camera or analysis system is specified for the standalone MBE-300. A phone or camera, imaging hood and software would be separate parts of a capture and analysis workflow.

Are a tank, hood, fan lid or electrophoresis power supply included?

No. Those items belong to separately specified accessories or named packages. The standalone MBE-300 includes the illuminator and inclined MBE-LID-AM580 amber filter.

Does blue light mean I do not need eye protection?

Do not treat blue illumination as an eye-safety guarantee. Use the appropriate filtering and follow your laboratory safety procedures, including any required protective equipment, for the full setup.

What power and shutdown specifications are listed?

The MBE-300 requires DC 12 V, 2 A and has an approximately six-minute automatic shutdown. This is the illuminator power requirement, not a substitute for the separate supply needed to run electrophoresis.
