APERA INSTRUMENTS / WS200 / AI4721

Fluoride, pH and conductivity.
One meter, three probes.

The WS200 measures fluoride with Apera’s F501-S 3-in-1 electrode, pH with the 201T-S, and conductivity with the 2301T-S cell, and converts conductivity to TDS, salinity and resistivity, with temperature from the probes. Apera calls it a 7-in-1 meter: fluoride from 0.02 to 1900 ppm, pH from −2.00 to 19.99, and conductivity across five auto-ranging spans up to 199.9 mS/cm.

The kit arrives in a carrying case with all three electrodes and every standard needed to calibrate them: two fluoride, three pH and a 1413 µS/cm conductivity standard. The handheld is IP57 rated and runs on two AA batteries, for drinking water, surface water and treatment work in the field or the lab.

WS200 manual fluoride preparation and electrode activation steps
WS200 instruction manual, section 4.1: connect the F501-S, choose the unit and activate the electrode.

Activate the fluoride probe.
Then calibrate at two points.

Connect the F501-S and the meter switches to fluoride mode on its own. A new electrode, or one being used for the first time, soaks in the 19.00 mg/L standard for one hour; in regular use, 10 to 20 minutes is enough. Wait until the reading settles and the smiley-face stability icon stays on before you calibrate. Readings during activation are random.

Press CAL and the meter asks for 0.19 mg/L first, then 19.00 mg/L. Rinse the probe in distilled or deionized water, shake off the excess, dip it, stir gently and let it stand; press CAL again when the stability icon stays on. The L and H icons confirm a two-point calibration. Apera states no stirring or added reagents are needed in the sample.

Protect the fluoride result.

Match the prompt

The meter does not recognize which fluoride standard is in the cup. Use the solution the display asks for, 0.19 mg/L or 19.00 mg/L; the wrong one produces a wrong calibration.

Keep the low standard clean

The 0.19 mg/L standard contaminates easily, and a small amount of carryover causes a large error. Apera recommends replacing the fluoride standards after four to five uses.

Low to high, same temperature

Measure from low to high concentration where you can; going from high to low, rinse first. Keep samples within ±15°C of the standards, and at the same temperature for the best accuracy. Apera lists a sample pH requirement of 5.0–6.0 for fluoride.

Calibrate pH at one, two or three points.

Connect the 201T-S pH/ATC electrode, unscrew its storage bottle and the meter opens in pH mode. Calibration starts at pH 7.00 (C1), then pH 4.00 (C2) and pH 10.01 (C3); press the enter key after any point to stop there. One point at pH 7.00 suits work to ±0.1 pH; use 4.00/7.00 for acidic samples, 7.00/10.01 for alkaline samples, and all three for a wide range or a new electrode.

The meter recognizes buffers from three series: USA (1.68, 4.00, 7.00, 10.01, 12.45), NIST (1.68, 4.01, 6.86, 9.18, 12.45) and CH. Err1 flags an electrode zero point outside ±60 mV and Err2 a slope outside 85–105%. Store the electrode in its bottle of 3M KCl (Apera AI1107); Apera puts its service life at about one to two years.

Purified water compensation

Two optional settings apply pH temperature compensation for purified water and for purified water with ammonia added. Both are off by default.

ORP with an optional probe

Short-press the mode key for mV. With Apera’s 301Pt-S ORP electrode, sold separately, the meter reads −1999 to 1999 mV at 1 mV resolution, ±0.1% FS.

WS200 manual conductivity standard series and calibration range chart
WS200 instruction manual, section 7.4: standard series and calibration range by cell constant.

Conductivity is factory calibrated.
Check it monthly.

Connect the 2301T-S and press CAL in COND mode, then dip the cell in the 1413 µS/cm standard and press CAL when the reading is stable. Apera ships the conductivity function calibrated and recommends recalibrating about once a month, and whenever the cell is new or has been idle. TDS, salinity and resistivity are calculated from conductivity, so they need no separate calibration; press the enter key to step through them.

With the supplied K = 1 cell calibrated at 1413 µS/cm, Apera gives a range up to 100 mS/cm. The meter also accepts 0.1 and 10 cm⁻¹ cells, reference temperatures of 25, 20 or 18°C, and a temperature coefficient from 0.00 to 9.99%/°C, 2.00%/°C by default. Do not brush the platinum-black plates; rinse them with purified water.

WS200 manual LCD display diagram with numbered indicators
WS200 instruction manual, section 3.1: display layout and indicators.

Read the display at a glance.

The backlit LCD shows the parameter, the reading, the unit and the sample temperature together, with a smiley-face icon once the reading is stable and L, M and H icons for the calibration points in use. A battery icon warns when the two AA cells are low.

Five keys run the meter: power, CAL, MODE, enter/backlight and M+/RM. Press M+ when the reading is stable to store it with its number, unit and temperature; hold it to recall stored readings. The backlight times out after 0, 1, 3 or 6 minutes and the meter switches itself off after 0, 10 or 20 minutes, both set in the parameter menu.

Check the specifications.

Fluoride accuracy is ±0.02 ppm or ±5% of reading, whichever is greater, with automatic temperature compensation from 0 to 80°C. pH accuracy is ±0.01 pH ±1 digit, with compensation from 0 to 100°C. Conductivity accuracy is ±1.0% FS, with compensation from 0 to 50°C; TDS reads to 100 g/L, salinity to 100 ppt and resistivity to 100 MΩ·cm.

The meter stores 800 readings with their number, unit and temperature. It measures 65 × 120 × 31 mm and weighs 180 g, runs on two AA batteries and is IP57 rated against dust and water.

The Apera WS100 (AI4725) is the same fluoride and pH kit without the conductivity cell. For calcium and magnesium hardness, the YD300 (AI4731) uses the same handheld format with Apera’s 601-S hardness electrode.

WS200 buyer questions

What does the F501-S fluoride probe include?

It is a 3-in-1 combination electrode: fluoride ion-selective, reference and temperature elements in one body. Apera states that no stirring or added reagents are needed.

How long does activation take?

One hour in the 19.00 mg/L standard for a new electrode or first use; 10 to 20 minutes in regular use. Start calibrating once the reading is stable.

Which fluoride units can it display?

mg/L, ppm and pF. The meter also shows the electrode mV.

How often should I calibrate fluoride?

Apera recommends calibrating before each use when accuracy matters. If accuracy needs are low, check the probe in a standard first; if the error is small, recalibration is not necessary.

Can it measure ORP?

Yes, in mV mode with Apera’s 301Pt-S ORP electrode, which is sold separately: −1999 to 1999 mV at 1 mV resolution.

Do TDS, salinity and resistivity need their own calibration?

No. They are calculated from conductivity, so calibrating conductivity at 1413 µS/cm covers them. Conductivity is calibrated before the meter leaves the factory.

How should I store the electrodes?

Rinse the fluoride probe, shake off the water and store it dry with its cap on. Keep the pH electrode in its storage bottle of 3M KCl. The conductivity cell can be kept in purified water before use to protect the platinum black.

What does it run on?

Two AA batteries, with three spares in the kit. The meter is IP57 rated and turns itself off after 10 minutes by default.

What warranty applies?

Apera’s limited warranty covers the meter for two years and the probes for six months from delivery, excluding misuse, accidental damage, improper maintenance, unauthorized repair and the other causes in Apera’s terms. Warranty service is handled through Apera; returns are coordinated with Blue Tiger Scientific.
