Total Nitrogen High Range — choose the range for your sample
Choose this high-range kit for expected total nitrogen of 10–150 mg/L as N, when the low-range method would be too limited. A 0.5 mL sample aliquot supports the higher concentration workflow.
Pre-dosed digestion and color-development reagents reduce reagent weighing and preparation, while a matched two-stage workflow gives a total-nitrogen result rather than a nitrate-only snapshot. Lot and expiry markings support reagent traceability; follow the supplied instructions for your lot.

Range and result basis
The US manufacturer offer specifies expected samples of 10–150 mg/L as N. HI83314 and HI83399 specify an instrument method scale of 0–150 mg/L as N with 1 mg/L resolution. The zero-based scale is not a claim that this kit is suitable below the US offer’s 10 mg/L lower bound.
Digestion converts organic and inorganic nitrogen to nitrate for the color reaction. The reported result is total nitrogen expressed as N—not a species-selective nitrate, nitrite or ammonia result. Instrument chemical-form conversion does not turn this into a species-specific assay.
Test capacity, not a vial count
One order is one nominal 50-test reagent pack: up to 49 sample results with one reagent blank. Two-stage chemistry uses digestion and final reaction vials; the test count is not a physical vial count. Additional blanks, QC and repeats consume supplies.
What you need for the workflow
Have the named HI83314 or HI83399 method, its manual-specified vial adapter, a suitable HI839800 reactor, a cooling rack, accurate liquid-transfer equipment for 0.5 mL and 2 mL transfers, clean wipes, and SDS-directed PPE. Have suitable deionized water and all method-required reagents; check the supplied pack contents before use. Instruments, reactor and transfer equipment are not represented as included.
Match the instrument method and adapter
Use the Nitrogen Total HR (16) method documented for HI83314 or HI83399 and the adapter specified by that instrument’s manual. Check that the supplied kit matches your instrument and adapter before use; do not assume other vial formats or adapters are interchangeable.
105 °C digestion, then staged color development
For a blank and a sample, add one PERSULFATE/N packet to each HI93767B-B digestion vial, then 0.5 mL deionized water to the blank and 0.5 mL sample to the other vial. Cap and shake vigorously about 30 seconds or until dissolved. Heat for 30 minutes at 105 °C (221 °F); remove after 30 minutes and cool in a rack to room temperature. Add one BISULFITE/N packet to each, cap and shake gently 15 seconds, then wait 3 minutes. Add one HI93767-0 packet to each, shake gently 15 seconds and wait 2 minutes. Transfer 2 mL of each digest into its respective HI93766V-0HR reaction vial, cap tightly and invert 10 times. Wait 5 minutes, zero with the reacted blank and read the reacted sample. This overview follows the current instrument manuals; read the complete procedure before handling.
Reagent blank and repeat measurements
The instrument manuals say a blank can be reused for one week when stored in a dark place at room temperature. Use the same reagent lot for blank and sample; the manuals recommend a blank for each set of measurements. This is not an extension of reagent shelf life or a guarantee beyond labelled expiry.
Safety and component documents
Read all method warnings and the current SDS for the actual lot before handling. The manuals strongly recommend the HI740217 safety shield. Do not use an oven or microwave: leaks may generate a corrosive and potentially explosive atmosphere. Digestion vials remain hot after heating, and final reaction vials become hot during mixing. Store unused vials in their packaging in a cool, dark place; follow local chemical-waste requirements. Hanna classifies this offer as dangerous goods for ground-only shipment. Before use, check the supplied component labels and current SDS for your lot. Use PERSULFATE/N as specified by the method; do not substitute PERSULFATE/P. The linked component SDS are references, not a guarantee of a complete lot-matching set.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I choose HR?
Choose this high-range kit for expected total nitrogen of 10–150 mg/L as N, when the low-range method would be too limited. A 0.5 mL sample aliquot supports the higher concentration workflow.
Does this measure nitrate or ammonia separately?
Digestion converts organic and inorganic nitrogen to nitrate for the color reaction. The reported result is total nitrogen expressed as N—not a species-selective nitrate, nitrite or ammonia result. Instrument chemical-form conversion does not turn this into a species-specific assay.
How many sample tests can one pack support?
One order is one nominal 50-test reagent pack: up to 49 sample results with one reagent blank. Two-stage chemistry uses digestion and final reaction vials; the test count is not a physical vial count. Additional blanks, QC and repeats consume supplies.
Which photometer method and adapter do I need?
Use the Nitrogen Total HR (16) method documented for HI83314 or HI83399 and the adapter specified by that instrument’s manual. Check that the supplied kit matches your instrument and adapter before use; do not assume other vial formats or adapters are interchangeable.
What are the sample volume and heating conditions?
0.5 mL sample and 0.5 mL deionized-water blank are used in separate digestion vials. Heat at 105 °C for 30 minutes, cool to room temperature, then complete the staged additions and 2 mL transfer into final reaction vials. Do not substitute a generic COD digestion.
Can I reuse the reagent blank?
The instrument manuals say a blank can be reused for one week when stored in a dark place at room temperature. Use the same reagent lot for blank and sample; the manuals recommend a blank for each set of measurements. This is not an extension of reagent shelf life or a guarantee beyond labelled expiry.
What must I have besides the reagent pack?
Have the named HI83314 or HI83399 method, its manual-specified vial adapter, a suitable HI839800 reactor, a cooling rack, accurate liquid-transfer equipment for 0.5 mL and 2 mL transfers, clean wipes, and SDS-directed PPE. Have suitable deionized water and all method-required reagents; check the supplied pack contents before use. Instruments, reactor and transfer equipment are not represented as included.
What sample interferences and SDS checks matter?
Chloride above 3000 mg/L, bromide above 240 mg/L and chromium above 0.5 mg/L can interfere. Follow the full method and verify actual lot instructions and component SDS. Before use, check the supplied component labels and current SDS for your lot. Use PERSULFATE/N as specified by the method; do not substitute PERSULFATE/P. The linked component SDS are references, not a guarantee of a complete lot-matching set.
