The HI93414 is a versatile, portable meter engineered for precise measurement of two critical water quality parameters: turbidity and chlorine. Leveraging an advanced optical system, this instrument delivers accurate and consistent readings by effectively minimizing interference from stray light and color in the sample. Built-in calibration using supplied standards compensates for any fluctuations in the tungsten light source. For chlorine analysis, the colorimeter employs a narrow 525 nm band interference filter, ensuring optimal wavelength for both free and total chlorine detection. All measurements are conducted in 25 mm round cuvettes made of specialized optical glass, which maximizes the repeatability of both turbidity and chlorine measurements.

Key Features at a Glance:

  • Triple Measurement Modes: Offers ratio mode for turbidity, free chlorine, and total chlorine. Turbidity range: 0.00 to 1000 NTU. Free/Total Chlorine range: 0.00 to 5.00 mg/L (ppm).
  • Multiple Reading Options: Choose between normal, continuous, or signal averaging measurement modes to suit your application.
  • EPA Compliant: Meets and exceeds EPA and Standard Methods requirements for both turbidity and colorimetric chlorine measurements. EPA mode ensures turbidity readings are rounded for compliant reporting.
  • Comprehensive Calibration: Perform two, three, or four-point turbidity calibration using the included (<0.10, 15.0, 100, and 750 NTU) standards. Customize calibration points with user-prepared standards. For chlorine, utilize the 1.00 mg/L (ppm) CAL Check™ standard for calibration and verification.
  • AMCO AEPA-1 Primary Turbidity Standards: The supplied AMCO AEPA-1 standards are USEPA-recognized primary standards, non-toxic, uniform styrene divinylbenzene polymer spheres, offering reusability and long-term stability.
  • CAL Check™ for Chlorine: Validate the chlorine colorimeter's performance at any time using HANNA's exclusive, NIST traceable CAL Check™ standards, each provided with a Certificate of Analysis for traceability.
  • Fast Tracker™ T.I.S.: Simplify data collection and management in the field by recording time and location of measurements using iButton® tags at sampling points.
  • GLP Data Functionality: Ensures traceability of calibration conditions, including calibration points, date, and time.
  • Extensive Data Logging: Store up to 200 measurements in internal memory for later recall.
  • Effortless Data Transfer: Download logged data to a Windows PC via RS232 or USB ports using the HI92000 software for further analysis and storage.
  • Backlit LCD: Provides a clear, user-friendly interface with step-by-step guidance through routine operation and calibration.

Turbidity is a crucial indicator of drinking water quality. Beyond aesthetics, controlling turbidity is a vital safeguard against waterborne pathogens. In natural water sources, turbidity measurements assess overall water quality and its suitability for aquatic life. Historically, wastewater treatment relied heavily on turbidity control, and even today, final turbidity measurements are essential for verifying compliance with regulatory standards.

Water turbidity is an optical property that describes the scattering and absorption of light rather than its transmission. Suspended solids are the primary cause of light scattering in liquids. Higher turbidity correlates with increased light scattering. Even ultrapure liquids exhibit some degree of light scattering, meaning zero turbidity is practically unattainable.

Drinking water treatment facilities using surface water sources (lakes and rivers) are mandated by the EPA to monitor and report turbidity. The EPA Method 180.1 outlines specific requirements for nephelometers and reporting measurements, including an applicable range of 0-40 NTU, a tungsten lamp light source (2200-3000°K), a maximum 10 cm path length for incident and scattered light, a detector centered at 90° with a spectral peak response between 400 nm and 600 nm, and a sensitivity to detect turbidity differences of 0.02 NTU or less in low turbidity waters.

Reporting Requirements According to EPA Method 180.1:

NTU reading  Rounded to nearest
0.0 - 1.0 0.05
1 - 10 0.1
10 - 40 1
40 - 100  5
100 - 400 10
400 - 1000 50
> 1000 100

The HI93414 turbidity and chlorine meter meets and exceeds the performance criteria specified by EPA Method 180.1 and Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater 2130 B.

Principle of Operation

The light beam that passes through the sample is scattered in all directions. The intensity and pattern of the scattered light is affected by many variables, such as wavelength of the incident light, particle size and shape, refractive index, and color. The optical system of the HI93414 includes a tungsten filament lamp, a scattered light detector (90°) and a transmitted light detector (180°).

In the ratio turbidimeter range, the microprocessor of the instrument calculates the NTU value from the signals that reach the two detectors by using an effective algorithm that corrects and compensates for interferences of color. The optical system and measuring technique also compensate for fluctuations in lamp intensity, minimizing the need for frequent calibration.

In the non-ratio turbidimeter range, the NTU value is calculated from the signal on the scattered light detector (90°). This method offers a high linearity on the low range but is more sensitive to lamp intensity fluctuations. The lower detection limit of a turbidimeter is determined by stray light that is detected by the sensors but not caused by light scattering from suspended particles. The optical system of the HI93414 is designed to have very low stray light, providing highly accurate results for low turbidity samples.

The HI98703-11 AMCO AEPA-1 standards ensure that measurements are traceable to a primary reference materials. These standards are used for calibration and performance verification of the HI93414 turbidity meter.
