HANNA PHOTOMETER REAGENTS · HI93731
A zinc refill is more than a powder packet.
Plan for both parts of the HI97731 zinc procedure. These complete reagent sets pair powder reagent A with liquid reagent B, so the replenishment matches the actual method rather than the generic packet image alone.
Choose HI93731-01 for 100 tests or HI93731-03 for 300 tests. Pack size changes your test supply, not the method or measurement range.
Official Hanna generic reagent image; the zinc set also uses liquid reagent B. Printed expiration dates are illustrative, not the dates of supplied stock.
Check the meter, method and reporting basis
Primary reference: HI97731 — 0.00 to 3.00 mg/L as Zn. Both packs are also documented for HI83300, HI83305, HI83306, HI83308, HI83399. Select the matching method in your exact instrument manual; do not assume every Hanna photometer uses these reagents.
What the chemistry measures
The Zincon colorimetric chemistry changes the sample response from brownish-green toward blue. The HI97731 measures that response as zinc in water samples over 0.00 to 3.00 mg/L as Zn. Its instruction manual identifies the 18th-edition Standard Methods adaptation; the current reagent-page description cites the 20th edition. Follow the procedure for your exact instrument.
What arrives — and what stays separate
The complete set supplies HI93731A-0 powder and HI93731B-0 liquid for the selected test count. It is not a powder-only refill; the manufacturer photograph is generic reagent artwork, not a complete contents photograph.
The photometer, cuvettes, stoppers, caps, graduated sample-preparation glassware and dispensing accessories are not included. CAL Check standards are separate instrument-verification products, not reagents for reacting with a water sample.
The HI97731 workflow at a glance
Measure 20 mL of sample in a graduated glass vial. Add one packet of HI93731A-0, close and invert until the powder dissolves. Transfer 10 mL of that mixture to a cuvette, fit the stopper and cap, align it and zero the HI97731. Remove the cuvette, add 0.5 mL of HI93731B-0, close and swirl gently for 15 seconds. Return it to the meter and use the 3-minute 30-second Read countdown.
Use the linked method manual for the full procedure and temperature guidance. Keep cuvette exteriors clean and dry, avoid bubbles and maintain the specified alignment in the holder.
Water samples: check the matrix before relying on a result
The HI97731 manual lists potential interference from iron above 7 mg/L, aluminum above 6 mg/L, copper, manganese or nickel above 5 mg/L, and cadmium above 0.5 mg/L.
This is not a universal seawater, brine or high-interference-matrix claim. Confirm the sample composition against the exact instrument method before testing; a larger pack does not overcome an interference.
Choose a test supply you can use
HI93731-01 is the 100-test refill; HI93731-03 is the 300-test refill for a larger sampling workload. Each order quantity is one complete selected pack, not one test. Check the lot and expiration markings on the supplied packets and bottles and plan consumption accordingly.
Handling and shipping
The US SDS identifies potassium cyanide among the ingredients in reagent A and identifies reagent B as cyclohexanone, a flammable liquid. Reagent A must not contact acids, which can release very toxic gas. Review both SDS for suitable ventilation, protective equipment, incompatibilities and waste handling. Keep reagent B away from heat, sparks and flames.
Hanna classifies these packs as Dangerous Goods for ground shipment only. Review the component SDS before ordering and using the set; the brief workflow above is not a substitute for the complete safety documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose the 100- or 300-test pack?
HI93731-01 supplies reagent for 100 tests; HI93731-03 supplies reagent for 300 tests. Choose by expected workload and marked expiration dates. Both are complete method reagent sets, and neither changes the analytical range.
Is this a powder-only zinc test?
No. The HI97731 method needs HI93731A-0 powder and HI93731B-0 liquid. One determination uses one packet of A and 0.5 mL of B. The generic manufacturer packet photograph does not show every supplied component.
When do I zero the HI97731?
Prepare 20 mL of sample with one packet of A, then transfer 10 mL of that mixture to a cuvette and zero the instrument. Add 0.5 mL of B only after zeroing. Zeroing untreated sample instead would change the documented procedure.
How long do I mix and wait after reagent B?
Swirl gently for 15 seconds after adding B, then use the HI97731 3-minute 30-second measurement countdown. Follow the complete manual for preparation, cuvette alignment and temperature guidance.
What handling checks matter for this formulation?
Reagent A contains potassium cyanide; contact with acids can release very toxic gas. Reagent B is cyclohexanone and is flammable. Read both linked US SDS and use their specified ventilation, protection, storage and disposal controls. This is not a harmless single-packet substitute.
Which instruments are documented for HI93731?
Both packs are documented for HI83300, HI83305, HI83306, HI83308, HI83399, HI97731. The procedure and range summarized here are for HI97731; use the matching method and full manual for another named instrument.
Can I use it in any water matrix?
The HI97731 manual lists potential interference from iron above 7 mg/L, aluminum above 6 mg/L, copper, manganese or nickel above 5 mg/L, and cadmium above 0.5 mg/L. Validate the matrix against the method rather than assuming seawater or brine compatibility.
Does my order include the meter, cuvettes or standards?
No. This is a complete reagent set only, in the selected 100- or 300-test size. Supply the compatible meter, cuvettes with stoppers and caps, preparation and dispensing accessories separately. CAL Check standards are also separate and cannot replace sample reagents.
