HANNA IRIS · HI802-01 · VISIBLE SPECTROPHOTOMETER
Visible chemistry, with fewer method-selection steps.
Choose the Hanna HI802-01 iris when your water or wastewater laboratory needs variable-wavelength measurements and a supported barcoded-vial workflow in one portable instrument. This is the US 115 V configuration, supplied with a 15 VDC power adapter—not the HI802-02 230 V version.
- Reduce manual method selection with the included reader for supported 13 mm barcoded reagent vials.
- Match established visible-light chemistry—or develop documented user methods across 340–900 nm.
- Keep measurement records on the instrument and export CSV or PDF by USB; no proprietary transfer software required.
The right instrument starts with the method
Best fit: laboratories that need supported 13 mm barcode methods alongside cuvette-based visible assays and user-method flexibility. Not the right fit for full UV–Vis work: its 340–900 nm range cannot measure DNA/protein absorbance at 260/280 nm. A selectable wavelength does not make every assay, reagent or vial compatible.
What barcode recognition actually does
In Barcode Methods mode, the HI802 reads supported Hanna 13 mm barcoded reagent vials through its dedicated adapter and identifies the corresponding method and parameter range. The method sets the measurement wavelength; you still follow the assay’s preparation, blank/zero, timing and interference requirements.
This is not a general-purpose product-barcode or sample-ID scanner. Recognition does not perform digestion, identify an unknown sample, eliminate quality controls or confer regulatory approval.

Two ways to streamline supported vial methods
Optional rotational averaging. With Average set to On for supported vial methods, vial rotation takes 256 absorbance readings and rejects outliers, helping reduce variation from minor vial imperfections. These are readings of one vial, not 256 samples; this does not apply to every cell type or guarantee analytical accuracy. Clean vials and the method’s quality controls remain essential.
Shared zero, where designated. Shared-zero support can reduce repeated setup only for the manufacturer-designated barcode methods and wavelength groups. A matching wavelength alone does not establish eligibility; COD methods are not shared-zero eligible, and stored zero is not the same as shared zero. Follow each method’s reagent-blank and quality-control requirements.
Optical flexibility, with defined limits
The split-beam tungsten-halogen optical system covers 340–900 nm with 1 nm wavelength resolution, ±1.5 nm wavelength accuracy and 5 nm spectral bandwidth. Measurement modes are absorbance, transmittance and concentration; the photometric range is 0.000–3.000 Abs. Factory methods control wavelength selection; editable wavelengths belong to user methods.
Choose the exact analyte, concentration range, reagent code and cell format from the manual before ordering consumables. There is no single concentration range or accuracy that applies to every assay. This page does not promise continuous spectral scanning.
Included instrument package—not an assay starter kit
The current MAN802 07/26 manual lists four 22 mm sample cuvettes with caps; a 16 mm cuvette adapter; a 10 mm square-cuvette adapter; the dedicated 13 mm barcode-vial adapter; wiping cloth; scissors; USB cable; 15 VDC power adapter; USB flash drive; protective dust cover; instrument quality certificate; and instruction manual.
Reagents, barcoded reagent vials, standards and a digestion reactor are not included. To run an assay, add the exact method’s chemicals, blanks/standards, sample-preparation supplies, required cell format and safety equipment. Digestion methods additionally need the specified reactor and cooling arrangements. An instrument quality certificate is not a promise of a separate accredited calibration service.
Build and document a user method
Up to 100 user methods can define as many as five wavelengths and timers. For eligible single-wavelength concentration methods, calibration accepts up to ten points by measuring standards or entering absorbance values. Calibration is not available for absorbance, transmittance or multiwavelength methods; factory methods already contain their own curves. Developing a method still requires suitable standards, validation and your laboratory’s quality controls.
Store up to 9,999 measured values and export records as CSV or PDF to USB flash storage or transfer them to a PC/Mac over USB. No Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, automatic LIMS integration, electronic-signature system or audit-trail compliance is promised.
HI802, HI801 or HI83399: choose the workflow
| HI802 — this instrument |
Choose when supported 13 mm barcode methods matter, alongside 340–900 nm variable-wavelength measurements and user methods. Its dedicated barcode adapter is included. |
| HI801 — alternative |
Also a 340–900 nm visible spectrophotometer with user-method capability. Its manual describes conventional 13 mm vial operation, not the HI802 barcode workflow. Do not fit the HI801 vial adapter into the HI802. |
| HI83399 — separate alternative |
Choose for a defined water/wastewater photometer workflow with five fixed wavelengths (420, 466, 525, 575 and 610 nm), plus digital-electrode pH capability. It is not a continuously selectable-wavelength or HI802 barcode instrument; the pH electrode is separate. |
HI83399 is an alternative instrument, not a compatible accessory or a required second meter. Neither instrument choice removes reagent or digestion requirements. Compare your actual method list rather than a generic method-count claim.
Frequently asked questions
Is HI802-01 the correct US configuration, and can it work away from mains power?
Yes. HI802-01 is the 115 V US version and includes a 15 VDC adapter; HI802-02 is the separate 230 V version. The instrument also uses a rechargeable 10.8 VDC Li-ion battery. The manual rates battery operation at 3,000 measurements or eight hours, excluding vial rotation; actual use and battery condition affect runtime.
Will the barcode reader recognize our existing reagent vials or sample labels?
Only the supported barcoded 13 mm reagent-vial methods are documented. Match the reagent code and parameter range to the HI802 manual before purchase. The reader is not a universal barcode reader and does not scan arbitrary sample labels. Non-barcoded cuvette methods still require their specified method selection and preparation; the barcode feature does not make other suppliers’ vials compatible.
Can it replace a full UV–Vis instrument or measure DNA at 260/280 nm?
No. Its wavelength range starts at 340 nm and ends at 900 nm. It cannot perform measurements at 260 or 280 nm. Variable-wavelength selection supports methods within that range; it does not establish continuous spectral-scanning capability or compatibility with every visible assay.
What do we need beyond this package to run our first assay?
Select the exact manual method, then obtain its specified reagents or barcoded vials, appropriate cells, blanks and standards, preparation tools and PPE. COD and other digestion procedures also require the specified reactor and cooling equipment. Four 22 mm cuvettes and the named adapters are included, but chemicals and a reactor are not. The hardware package alone is not ready to run every assay.
How many adapters are included, and can we reuse an HI801 adapter?
MAN802 07/26 identifies two cuvette adapters (16 mm round and 10 mm square) plus one dedicated 13 mm barcode-vial adapter: three adapter assemblies total. The manual explicitly warns against inserting an HI801 vial adapter, which can damage the HI802 holder. The 22 mm round and 50 mm rectangular formats do not need an adapter; additional cell formats are not all supplied.
Can we create and calibrate our own methods?
Yes, within the documented user-method settings: up to 100 methods, up to five wavelengths and timers, and calibration with up to ten points for eligible concentration methods. Standards can be measured or absorbance values entered. Calibration is not available for absorbance, transmittance or multiwavelength methods. A programmed curve is not automatic method validation or regulatory acceptance; verify selectivity, range, interferences and quality controls for your application.
How do we export data, and does it connect directly to our LIMS?
The instrument stores up to 9,999 values and supports CSV/PDF exports via USB flash drive and USB transfer to a PC/Mac. Confirm that the exported fields meet your recordkeeping needs. No native LIMS connector, wireless connection, electronic signatures or regulatory data-integrity certification is specified here; any downstream integration needs separate assessment.
When should we choose HI802 rather than HI801 or HI83399, and what warranty applies?
Choose HI802 for supported barcode-vial work plus variable visible wavelengths. Compare HI801 for conventional variable-wavelength visible work, and HI83399 for its fixed-wavelength water/wastewater methods and digital-electrode pH capability—not as an HI802 accessory. The HI802 manual states a two-year warranty against workmanship/material defects for intended use and prescribed maintenance, limited to repair or replacement; accident, misuse, tampering and neglected maintenance are excluded. Service requires authorization and the manual’s return conditions. Shared shipping/returns terms are in Additional Information.
