A portable conductivity kit with a K=1 probe and USB data logging.
APERA INSTRUMENTS / EC8500 / AI5522
Take conductivity measurements from the sampling point to the bench with EC8500 and its supplied 2301T-S conductivity/temperature probe. The K=1 platinum-black cell supports a 0–200 mS/cm probe range, while selectable TDS, salinity and resistivity modes turn conductivity into useful calculated views. A backlit display, manual or timed logging and USB output help keep the reading, unit and sample temperature together instead of relying on a handwritten number alone.
Choose this configuration for routine liquid testing within the supplied probe’s range. The meter electronics can display higher conductivity with a different suitable electrode, but that does not extend the included K=1 cell beyond 200 mS/cm. The photographed beaker and computer illustrate workflows rather than additional supplied equipment.
Each card opens that model page. Match the supplied electrode and documented sample method. Different configurations are not interchangeable upgrades, and optional accessories are not supplied unless the exact kit contents say so.

The 2301T-S combines a platinum-black conductivity cell and a built-in 30 kΩ thermistor through one locking 8-pin connection. Its nominal cell constant is K=1. The probe is the sample-facing limit: the meter’s 0–1999 mS/cm electronics range requires an appropriate different electrode, such as the optional K=10 2310T-S, for higher-conductivity work. That electrode is not included. Keep the published conductivity accuracy of ±1.0% F.S. ±1 digit in its proper context; it is a full-scale specification, not ±1% of the reading.
TDS, salinity and resistivity are calculated from conductivity, not measured by three additional sensors. The meter offers TDS to 100 g/L, salinity to 100 ppt and resistivity to 100 MΩ·cm. Set the TDS conversion factor for the sample method within 0.40–1.00; the factory setting is 0.71. The reference temperature defaults to 25°C and the temperature coefficient to 2.00%/°C. These settings are adjustable, so record them when comparing results across batches or instruments rather than assuming every TDS number uses the same conversion.
Save individual measurements or use timed logging within the 500-set meter memory. Records include date, time, value, unit and temperature, with last-calibration information available. USB connects the instrument to PC-Link. Current Web PC-Link supports desktop Chrome or Edge on Windows and Mac, CSV export and report printing. When connected, newly logged measurements go to PC-Link instead of meter memory, so export and back up the session deliberately. This is a wired workflow, not Bluetooth or ZenTest, and it does not establish an immutable audit trail or regulated-system compliance.
Use conductivity to compare suitable water samples or follow changes in a treatment process. Choose standards near the expected range and use the same compensation settings for comparisons. Low-level samples are especially sensitive to carryover: a small residue of calibration standard can matter. The instrument does not identify individual dissolved ions or replace a method-specific chemical analysis.
Track calculated TDS where a conductivity-to-TDS method is appropriate. Select and document the factor for the sample rather than treating the factory 0.71 setting as universally correct. A consistent sampling temperature, clean vessel and repeatable rinsing routine help make batch comparisons meaningful. The calculated result is not a direct gravimetric dissolved-solids measurement.
The folding stand supports a practical bench workflow when checking samples or reviewing readings. Download stored records or log through USB, then keep the exported file with the sample identifiers in your own records. Photographs showing a laptop, beaker or liquid demonstrate use only. Confirm probe and sample compatibility before unusual chemistry or temperature work.
Connect the 2301T-S securely, inspect the cell and rinse away storage water with clean DI or distilled water. Select conductivity and confirm the cell constant and compensation settings before calibration. Use fresh portions of suitable standards rather than returning used liquid to its bottle. The meter recognizes 84 µS/cm, 1413 µS/cm, 12.88 mS/cm and 111.8 mS/cm; recognition is not a promise that every standard is supplied.
Perform the appropriate one- to three-point automatic calibration, using standards relevant to the expected samples. Rinse between standards and samples to control contamination. The illustrated kit and manual show three 50 mL standards, including 84 µS/cm, but the current packing text confirms only 1413 µS/cm and 12.88 mS/cm. Confirm the 84 µS/cm bottle before planning work that depends on it; 111.8 mS/cm is not promised in this kit.
Immerse the sensing cell, stir briefly to release trapped bubbles and wait for the stability indicator before recording. Where practical, pre-rinse with a little sample after the water rinse. Keep the probe’s specified 0–50°C measurement-range temperature separate from its 0–80°C operating specification. Neither the meter display endpoints nor a wider operating figure authorizes unrestricted compensated measurements at every temperature.
Rinse the electrode before and after each measurement using DI or distilled water. Do not rub the platinum-black sensing surface. Residue, oily contamination or trapped bubbles can interfere with the next reading, so inspect the cell rather than assuming an unstable display is a meter fault. Keep the connector dry and follow the electrode manual for cleaning beyond routine rinsing.
Return the conductivity probe to its cap containing clean DI or distilled water. Replace cap water when contaminated and keep the cap secure between uses. This is intentionally different from pH-electrode care: do not put this conductivity probe in KCl pH storage solution. If the electrode has dried, follow the manual’s rewetting instructions before calibration and measurement.
Check calibration after cleaning or whenever results become questionable. Power is supplied by three AA batteries; battery inclusion is not confirmed. The current limited warranty covers the instrument for three years and the probe for six months from delivery, subject to its terms and exclusions. Proper storage and preventive maintenance remain necessary; wear, misuse and damage are not blanket warranty coverage.
Use the physical controls for standalone measurement and calibration. The stable-reading indicator and HOLD help you read a result; a held display is not an onboard measurement-history logger for later upload.
Keep the connectors and battery compartment dry when changing parts. Follow the exact manual for key sequences, battery orientation and cap sealing. Screen values in photographs are illustrative, not test results or a promise of compatibility with another sensing head.
Each 8500 meter can measure and calibrate without a computer. It can retain up to 500 data sets, including date, time, measured value, unit, temperature and the last calibration record. M+ supports manual saving after stability; timed logging can be set from one minute through 99 hours 59 minutes. Deleting stored values cannot be undone.
For computer work, use the meter USB connection with the current Web PC-Link workflow on a desktop Chrome or Edge browser under Windows or Mac. The tool supports CSV output and browser-print reporting. Do not assume Firefox compatibility, a native Excel/PDF export format, an immutable audit trail, electronic signatures or regulatory validation.
When connected to PC-Link, new records go to the software rather than to the meter memory. Save and export important records before closing the browser. USB logging does not guarantee automatic backup, permanent retention or protection from user deletion. Keep the exact meter, configured probe and sample method with any record.
Alternative format: Apera EC20 Pocket Conductivity Tester Kit (AI212). Compare the exact standalone kit when Bluetooth-connected recordkeeping is not needed. A related family name does not establish the same probe upgrades or app support.
The current kit specifies 2301T-S: a K=1 platinum-black conductivity cell, integrated 30 kΩ thermistor and locking 8-pin connection. It is not a 2301T-Q.
No. The supplied 2301T-S is specified to 200 mS/cm. The wider meter range needs a suitable different electrode, such as the optional K=10 2310T-S, which is not included.
No. They are derived from conductivity. Calibrate conductivity and choose the appropriate conversion and compensation settings for your method.
1413 µS/cm and 12.88 mS/cm, 50 mL each, are consistently listed. The manual and kit image also show 84 µS/cm at 50 mL, but the packing text omits it. Confirm that bottle before relying on it. No 111.8 mS/cm standard is promised.
Clean DI or distilled water. Replace it if contaminated. Do not use KCl pH-electrode storage solution for the 2301T-S.
Not for new measurements logged while PC-Link is connected: those go to the software instead. Export and back up the session. Standalone meter memory holds 500 sets.
USB PC-Link, including current Web PC-Link on desktop Chrome or Edge for Windows and Mac, with CSV export and report printing. Bluetooth and ZenTest are not supported features of this kit.
The supplied probe manual specifies its conductivity measurement range at 0–50°C and separately lists a 0–80°C operating range. Meter display and compensation specifications differ by source revision; do not combine them into an unrestricted kit rating.
