APERA INSTRUMENTS / TN500 / AI483
TN500 adds a documented results workflow to portable white-light turbidity testing. Select the TruRead sequence, review average/minimum/maximum and individual readings, and use Windows PC-Link when the result needs to leave the instrument.
Choose TN500 for white-light work that needs dated records and reporting, not because you expect a wider range or better published basic accuracy than TN420. This is a portable meter that also works on a laboratory surface, not a benchtop-only instrument.
0-1000 NTU
Instrument range
Method/reporting scope is a separate requirement.
400-600 nm
Tungsten white light
Match the required optical method.
Windows records
PC-Link + selectable TruRead
Capacity depends on mode.
Start with the required optical method, then the recording workflow. Each card opens that product page. T500-1 is replacement standards only, not a fourth meter.
AI482
White light / essential workflow
Fixed 10-reading average. USB charging; no documented record export.
AI483
White light / recorded results
Selectable TruRead and Windows PC-Link data export.
AI481
Infrared / essential workflow
ISO 7027 optical method. Four AA batteries; readings recorded by hand.
AI486
Infrared / recorded results
ISO 7027 optical method. Four AA batteries and Windows PC-Link.
AI4205
STANDARDS ONLY / TN420 + TN500
Four sealed nonzero AMCO vials. No meter or zero. TN480 specifies T200-1.
INSTRUMENT RANGE AND METHOD SCOPE ARE DIFFERENT
Apera describes TN500 as EPA 180.1 compliant. EPA 180.1 Rev. 2.0 covers 0-40 NTU and directs dilution for samples above 40 NTU. A broader instrument scale helps characterize a sample; it does not remove the method’s preparation, checks or reporting requirements.
Manufacturer-stated method compliance is not a model-specific EPA approval certificate.
Follow the applicable method and program, including required verification, dilution and recordkeeping. A general weekly-check suggestion does not replace required method-specific checks.
WHY CHOOSE THIS CONFIGURATION
TruRead keeps the individual readings alongside average, minimum and maximum. Use the spread to assess changing or settling samples, not as permission to skip preparation.
Manual or automatic logging and Windows PC-Link support dated records and Excel-document export. No Mac, mobile, cloud or electronic-signature system is established here.
The 200-set headline applies to Normal mode. Longer TruRead sequences consume more storage, so export and memory planning belong in the workflow.
Choose 5, 10, 15 or 20 consecutive readings. TruRead displays the individual values with average, minimum and maximum; each reading is taken at 20-second intervals. Record manually or automatically according to the selected settings.
Windows PC-Link supports USB transfer and Excel-document export. The software also displays serial number, last-calibration information and parameters. These functions are not a verified complete historical audit trail or a claim of GLP/21 CFR Part 11 certification.
Plan storage around the selected sequence, not the largest headline number. The exact manuals give these onboard capacities:
Mixed use changes the available capacity. Export needed records before clearing the instrument; its clear-all function removes stored records rather than offering a selective archival system.
PC-Link supports a separate live-PC workflow. When that workflow is running, the manuals describe measurements going to the computer rather than being stored in the instrument. This is not cloud backup or a verified electronic-signature/audit-trail system.
READ THE TWO NUMBERS DIFFERENTLY
0.01 NTU
Low-range display increment
Other ranges use 0.1 and 1 NTU increments.
2% + stray light
Published reading-error specification
Accuracy: ≤±2% of reading plus stray light; stray light ≤0.02 NTU.
Worked specification example: at 1.00 NTU, the 2%-of-reading term alone is 0.02 NTU before the stray-light term. That arithmetic is not a complete method-uncertainty calculation or a promise of ±0.01 NTU measurement accuracy. Vials, sample preparation, calibration and the matrix remain part of the result.
TN500 meter; five standards at 0/20/100/400/800 NTU; six numbered sample vials; 10 mL silicone oil; microfiber cloth; 5 V/1 A adapter; USB cable; PC-Link software flash drive; manual and case.
USB cable is also included; the photo does not number it separately.
The complete meter kit includes zero. Replacement nonzero standards are a separate purchase; do not read a replacement-set name as all five calibration solutions.
SAMPLE PREPARATION IS PART OF THE MEASUREMENT
Use the specified 25 × 60 mm numbered sample vial and approximately 18 mL of sample. Keep the matching cap paired with it and follow the exact rinsing/mixing procedure.
Fine bubbles can raise readings; settling and light-absorbing material can change them. Keep preparation and waiting times consistent rather than averaging away a method problem.
Keep the vial clean and dry, avoid fingerprints/scratches, align its mark and close the cover. Use oil only as instructed and remove excess.
Work on a flat, level surface, not with the meter in your hand. Never pour sample into or wash the optical holder. The IP67 rating is not a direct-immersion measurement method. Turbidity is not a direct TSS mass measurement or a complete water-safety test.
The kit is supplied with five calibration values and is factory calibrated across its range. The manual permits later calibration with two or more appropriate points bracketing the expected range; local method/QC requirements still govern. Select the correct value because the instrument does not identify a standard automatically.
For low-range work, follow the manual’s zero check, warm-up and numbered-vial guidance. A display increment is not proof that an unchecked zero or contaminated vial is adequate.
The four nonzero AMCO standard vials must stay sealed. Zero-vial opening/refill instructions are different. Do not vigorously shake standards or infer that a generic shelf-life claim permits opening them.
Compatible accessory: T500-1 sealed AMCO nonzero standards is explicitly listed for TN500 and the other white-light model. Its four values are 20/100/400/800 NTU; it does not supply a meter or zero standard.
The infrared TN480 specifies T200-1 instead. Shared concentration labels do not establish universal cross-model or cross-brand compatibility.
The official family tutorial introduces the workflow. Use the exact TN500 manual for its controls, optical method, standards and software. The video is not a model-specific certification or a replacement for sealed-vial instructions.
TN500 AI483 is portable, with a rechargeable lithium battery and carrying case. Use it on a flat, level surface during measurement. Laboratory use does not turn it into a benchtop-only model.
Choose TN500 for selectable TruRead sequences, dated record storage, calibration information and Windows reporting. Both publish a 0-1000 NTU range and the same basic accuracy, so logging is the key upgrade rather than a better stated accuracy figure.
Not at every setting. Capacity is 200 Normal sets, or 100/61/44/34 TruRead sets for 5/10/15/20-reading sequences respectively. Mixed use changes capacity. Export needed records before clearing the instrument’s memory.
The documented PC-Link workflow is Windows-based, with software supplied on a flash drive and USB connection. No Mac/mobile/cloud support or specific modern Windows-version guarantee is established. Confirm institutional driver/software requirements before deployment.
No. The documented features include identifiers, date/time, modes, values and last-calibration information. They do not establish electronic signatures, a tamper-evident historical audit trail or 21 CFR Part 11 compliance.
No. It is Apera’s stated instrument-method positioning. EPA 180.1’s range and dilution requirements, required controls and your reporting program still apply. The 0-1000 NTU display range is not the undiluted method range.
T500-1 AI4205 is the four-value nonzero AMCO set for TN500 and TN420. It does not contain zero or a meter. The complete TN500 meter kit includes five standards, including zero. TN480 uses T200-1 instead.
It can show a sequence and its spread; it does not remove the underlying sample-preparation problem. Control bubbles, vial condition and timing. Do not treat averaging as a guarantee that a changing sample is correctly represented.
