IKA MULTIDRIVE BASIC M20 SUCCESSOR PACKAGE • 0010010968 • 100–120 V

A modern milling drive. The chamber you need to start.

Choose a defined laboratory grinding package rather than a drive with its essential vessel missing. IKA catalog 0010010968 combines the MultiDrive basic with a reusable MI 250-S, 250 mL milling chamber and its standard stainless-steel beater.

Designed around impact milling of suitable hard, brittle and dry samples, the package offers a 3,000–20,000 rpm speed range, LED controls, a timer and interval operation. The 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz US configuration is distinct from other regional order codes.

IKA identifies it as the successor package for the M 20 mill. That means a different purchasing option, not identical hardware, interchangeable legacy accessories or automatic equivalence for an established analytical method.

What is included in the M20 Successor Package?

Included MI 250-S milling chamber shown separately from the drive
The same included chamber shown separately, not a second vessel supplied with the package. Standard stainless-steel beater included.

One factory package, not an invented bundle

  • MultiDrive basic drive, in the specified 100–120 V configuration.
  • One MI 250-S sealed-version milling chamber, 250 mL maximum useful volume.
  • Standard stainless-steel beater supplied with the chamber.
  • The drive’s documented power cord, USB cable, socket wrench, disassembly tools and cleaning brush.

The vessel instructions also identify the cooling-circuit hose connections supplied with the chamber. An external cooling source, extra vessels, a tungsten-carbide beater, star-shaped cutter and software license are not established as part of this package.

The separately sold basic drive, US catalog 0025002639, does not include a milling vessel. This factory package supplies the specified MI 250-S rather than leaving the chamber selection to a later purchase.

Start with the standard beater’s actual limits

Impact milling, not a universal sample-processing promise

The included standard stainless-steel beater is specified for feed hardness up to 5 Mohs and impact feed size up to 7 mm. The chamber has a 250 mL maximum useful volume. These are different limits: none establishes a guaranteed batch mass, final particle size or processing time for every material.

IKA describes dry-grinding applications for suitable hard or brittle materials. The drive instructions give examples such as grain, roasted coffee, seeds, salts and feed materials. Material behavior, moisture, fat content, loading and cooling all affect the result.

Fibrous material can require the separately selected star-shaped cutter and an appropriate method. The optional hard-metal beater has different limits; its ratings must not be advertised as the performance of this standard-beater package.

Not a contamination-free milling claim. The stainless-steel tool and chamber are in contact with the sample. Assess suitability for trace-metal or other contamination-sensitive analysis before choosing the method.

Basic controls, without Control-model feature confusion

Close-up of the genuine MultiDrive basic LED control panel from manufacturer photograph
Actual Basic control-panel crop. Display values are illustrative and are not recommended settings for a sample method.

LED speed and time display, with straightforward operation

The MultiDrive basic uses a seven-segment LED display and a rotary/push control for speed and operation. It provides timer/counter functions and interval operation. The manual lists a Basic interval pattern of 13 seconds running and 2 seconds stopped; do not assume the Control model’s freely adjustable interval settings.

This is not MultiDrive control. The Basic drive does not provide the Control model’s weighing function, TFT display, temperature measurement, RFID reader or program/ramp-control functions. The MI 250-S in this package is also not a temperature-sensing T vessel.

The correct motor figures are 1,000 W rated input and 800 W rated output. Those figures are not interchangeable. The Basic drive’s own technical data and operating manual establish the Basic features used on this page.

Cooling jacket does not mean an included chiller

Indirect cooling through the chamber wall

The MI 250-S has connections for a water-cooling circuit, allowing heat to be removed indirectly rather than mixing coolant with the sample. The vessel manual specifies a maximum cooling-circuit pressure of 0.5 bar and a cooling-fluid range of −5 to +40 °C.

The package does not include a recirculating chiller. Select a suitable external cooling arrangement and secure the hoses as instructed; do not connect an unrestricted pressurized supply or treat the jacket as a built-in refrigerator.

The manufacturer permits dry-ice cooling only within the applicable drive and vessel instructions, including ventilation and pressure precautions. Liquid-nitrogen cooling is not permitted in the chamber’s technical table.

Cooling does not turn the Basic drive into a temperature-controlled system or remove its duty-cycle limit. Temperature-sensitive samples may need shorter runs, a different vessel/drive configuration or another preparation method.

How to plan a repeatable milling cycle

Original four-step milling workflow: inspect and select, load and close, grind within limits, cool before handling
Original planning diagram, not a substitute for installation or safety instructions. Maximum run time is 5 minutes, followed by at least 10 minutes off for cooling.

Set the method around the material, not the maximum dial setting

  • Inspect the drive, chamber, lid, seals and beater. Use only undamaged, manufacturer-approved components.
  • Choose a suitable feed preparation and charge. Respect the 7 mm impact-feed, 5 Mohs standard-beater and 250 mL useful-volume limits.
  • Attach and close the vessel correctly. The manual identifies green status indication as ready for operation; never bypass the closure safety arrangement.
  • Choose appropriate speed and time, watching for heat buildup, adhesion or overload. Stay within the maximum 5-minute run limit.
  • Allow at least 10 minutes off for cooling. Wait for a complete stop and safe handling temperature before opening; disconnect power for accessory changes and cleaning.

Final granularity depends on the sample, loading and duration. No universal fineness, throughput, recovery or temperature is promised. Trained users should document their own suitable method and read both operating manuals before use.

Which MultiDrive configuration do I need?

Basic versus Control and M20 replacement guide: this package has Basic and MI 250-S, not Control weighing or sensing; MT 150 and BT 250 require Control
Original selection guide. Separate models and optional vessels are not extra items included with this order.

Choose this package for defined 250 mL milling

Catalog 0010010968 supplies the Basic drive plus MI 250-S and standard beater. Choose it when its sample, vessel, control and operating limits suit the method.

Choose Control for the relevant advanced functions

Weighing, temperature monitoring and programmable functions belong to the appropriate Control configuration. Temperature monitoring also requires the correct sensing vessel; a drive upgrade alone does not make this non-T chamber measure temperature.

Do not put MT 150 or BT 250 tubes on Basic

The drive manual explicitly says the Basic unit does not operate those tubes, even with the TC 1 housing. The Control MT/BT packages are separate configurations with their own vessels and requirements.

Review an established M 20 method before changing hardware

The legacy M 20 uses a fixed 20,000 rpm; MultiDrive basic offers variable speed. Review vessel geometry, tool, loading and method performance rather than treating the successor designation as proof of identical results or accessory interchangeability.

Other formats are separate selections

An optional blending vessel is not in this package

The MultiDrive platform supports additional functions through separately selected vessels. The Basic drive can be paired with manufacturer-approved blending vessels for suitable mixing/wet-crushing tasks, but that does not mean such a vessel arrives in this order.

The adjacent manufacturer image illustrates the drive with an optional blending vessel. This package instead includes the MI 250-S chamber. Do not infer that both vessels, a large-volume blender or a dispersing attachment are supplied.

For wet milling, distinguish the sealed S version from an ordinary MI vessel and verify the material and actual supplied version. The vessel manual permits wet work in verified sealed S versions but marks solvents as not suitable. No blanket organic-solvent compatibility or pressure-reactor use is claimed here.

Application fit and when to choose another method

Hard or brittle dry samples

A suitable use case for the standard beater when feed size and hardness are within the published limits. Grain, suitable seeds, salts and other manufacturer-described sample classes still require method evaluation.

Samples sensitive to heating

Consider shorter runs, appropriate cooling and a validated preparation sequence. Basic does not measure sample temperature and its chamber is not the sensing T version.

Soft, fibrous or high-fat samples

These may behave differently from brittle dry feed. A different tool, preparation or vessel may be necessary. Do not assume the standard beater is the right configuration merely because the drive belongs to a versatile platform.

For research laboratory use by trained personnel. This system is not explosion-protected. Do not use it in explosive atmospheres or assume combustible dust, reactive media or unlisted materials are suitable without the manufacturer’s assessment and applicable safety controls. No clinical/diagnostic or universal food-contact regulatory approval is claimed.

Cleaning, wear and useful troubleshooting checks

Material coats the wall instead of grinding

Review whether moisture, fat content, loading or material properties suit the selected method. More speed or a longer run is not automatically the answer, and the duty limit still applies.

Vessel or drive gets hot

Stop and allow the required cooling period. Check loading, speed and cooling arrangements. Do not treat the Basic display as a sample-temperature measurement or bypass a protective stop.

Residue or tool wear affects the result

Clean the chamber manually according to its instructions. Inspect the beater, seals and lid. Worn tools can change performance; material-contact wear must be considered in contamination-sensitive methods.

The chamber is not dishwasher-cleanable. IKA identifies water with surfactant and isopropyl alcohol as approved cleaning agents in the vessel instructions; that does not authorize solvent milling during operation. Protect the lid seal, use appropriate gloves and follow the illustrated disassembly procedure.

For manufacturer technical support, repairs and service, contact IKA. Initiate product return requests through Blue Tiger Scientific under the applicable IKA conditions. The manuals state a 24-month warranty subject to terms and exclusions for wear, misuse and inadequate care; any registration extension depends on the applicable manufacturer terms.

Related workflows available from Blue Tiger

Related workflow: IKA T 25 digital drive for separately configured liquid dispersion. A rotor-stator disperser is a different preparation route, and the T 25 requires its own suitable dispersing tool and setup. It is not an accessory included with this mill.

Related workflow: IKA RV 10 digital pro V-C Complete for a separate solvent-concentration step. Consider it only where the broader research method calls for evaporation after an appropriately separate work-up. This link does not establish that organic solvent may be processed in the MI 250-S.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in IKA package 0010010968?

One MultiDrive basic drive and one MI 250-S 250 mL milling chamber with a standard stainless-steel beater. The drive’s documented accessories include its power cord, USB cable, wrench, disassembly tools and cleaning brush. No extra blending vessel, chiller, star-shaped cutter or hard-metal beater is established as supplied.

Is this an alternative to buying another IKA M 20 mill?

IKA identifies 0010010968 as its M20 Successor Package. It offers a Basic drive with variable 3,000–20,000 rpm and the specified MI 250-S chamber, while the legacy M 20 uses a fixed 20,000 rpm. It is not identical hardware or proof that legacy vessels/blades or a validated method transfer without review.

Does MultiDrive basic include weighing, a TFT screen or temperature monitoring?

No. The Basic-drive manual specifies LED controls and no weighing function, integrated temperature/RFID sensing or program-control function. Those are distinctions of appropriate Control configurations. The supplied MI 250-S is not the temperature-sensing T chamber.

How large or hard can the sample be with the supplied beater?

The MI 250-S is specified for up to 250 mL useful volume, feed hardness up to 5 Mohs with the standard beater, and impact feed size up to 7 mm. Those are separate limits, not a guarantee for every sample or a fixed permitted batch mass. The optional hard-metal tool’s higher rating is not the rating of this package.

Can I run this mill continuously or use a 30-minute cycle?

No. MultiDrive basic is limited to a maximum 5 minutes on followed by at least 10 minutes off for cooling. The chamber and material limits also apply. Control-model references to longer vessel-specific operation must not be copied to this Basic package.

Is a chiller included, and does the chamber regulate sample temperature?

No chiller is listed in this package. The chamber supports indirect water cooling through its jacket, with maximum circuit pressure 0.5 bar per the manual. Basic and the non-T MI 250-S do not measure or regulate sample temperature. Follow the vessel’s cooling instructions; liquid nitrogen is not permitted.

Can I add MT 150 or BT 250 tubes to this Basic drive later?

No. IKA’s drive manual explicitly says these tubes require MultiDrive control and do not operate on Basic, even with the TC 1 protective housing. Choose an appropriate Control configuration if that tube workflow is required; those tubes and the housing are not included here.

Does the sealed MI 250-S mean I can mill any liquid or solvent?

No. The manual distinguishes sealed S vessels that can support appropriate wet milling from ordinary MI versions that must not receive liquids. It also marks solvents as not suitable. Verify the actual supplied vessel version and method before wet work. The package is presented here for its manufacturer-described dry-grinding role, not universal solvent or pressure-vessel service.
