HANNA PHOTOMETER REAGENTS · HI93718
Keep iodine residual testing on the right chemistry.
Refill your HI97718 iodine workflow with pre-measured DPD powder packets. The 100- and 300-test packs deliver the same iodine method, giving you a choice of capacity rather than a change in range.

Match the method, not just the element name
HI97718: 0.0 to 12.5 mg/L as I₂. DPD chemistry develops a pink tint in iodine-containing samples. HI97718 reports 0.0 to 12.5 mg/L as I₂. These are iodine reagents, not iodide analysis or a selective replacement for chlorine or bromine chemistry.
What the selected pack supplies
The selected pack supplies HI93718-0 iodine powder reagent for 100 or 300 tests; one packet is used per determination. Photometer, cuvettes and validation standards are separate.
Where this method fits
Useful for an established water-testing program that specifies iodine as I₂. Check other oxidants and the sample’s hardness, alkalinity and acidity before interpreting a result; this is not a guarantee of iodine selectivity in mixed-disinfectant water.
The HI97718 workflow at a glance
Fill a clean cuvette with 10 mL of unreacted sample. Stopper and cap, align the notch securely in the holder groove and zero the HI97718. Remove the cuvette, add one HI93718-0 packet and shake gently for about 20 seconds to dissolve most of the reagent. Reinsert with the same alignment and use the 2-minute 30-second Read countdown before recording iodine as I₂.
Check the sample matrix
Bromine, chlorine, oxidized chromium and manganese, and ozone may interfere. Hardness above 500 mg/L as CaCO₃ calls for approximately 2 minutes of shaking after reagent addition. Alkalinity above 250 mg/L or acidity above 150 mg/L as CaCO₃ can give partial or fading color; follow the manual’s neutralization guidance with diluted HCl or NaOH.
Choose a pack around your workload
HI93718-01 supplies 100 tests; HI93718-03 supplies 300 tests. The larger pack supplies three times the determinations, not a different measuring range. One order quantity means one complete selected pack. Choose by testing frequency and the lot/expiry markings on supplied stock.
What to have beside the reagent set
Supply the compatible photometer, cuvettes with stoppers and caps, and the measuring/dispensing accessories required by the method separately. CAL Check standards are separate instrument-verification materials, not replacements for sample reagents.
Handling before you begin
The US SDS identifies inhalation and repeated-exposure hazards. Avoid breathing powder, use the specified protection and follow storage and disposal instructions. Absence of a Dangerous Goods notice on the retail page is not a guarantee of unrestricted transport everywhere.
Use the linked HI97718 instrument manual as the method reference for the complete procedure, precautions and instrument operation. This is not a separate reagent instruction manual.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose 100 or 300 tests?
HI93718-01 supplies 100 tests; HI93718-03 supplies 300 tests. Both are complete reagent sets for the same method. Choose by expected workload and marked expiry dates, not by a different analytical range.
Does this measure iodine or iodide?
The HI97718 DPD method reports iodine as I₂, not iodide. Its range is 0.0 to 12.5 mg/L as I₂. Confirm that this is the parameter specified by your water-testing program.
When do I zero the photometer?
Zero the HI97718 using 10 mL of unreacted sample before adding the powder. Then add one HI93718-0 packet, shake gently for about 20 seconds and use the 2-minute 30-second Read countdown.
Can chlorine or bromine affect the iodine reading?
Yes. Chlorine, bromine, ozone and oxidized forms of chromium and manganese are listed interferences. Do not assume selective iodine measurement in a mixed-oxidant sample.
What if the sample is hard or highly alkaline?
Follow the manual: hardness above 500 mg/L as CaCO₃ calls for about 2 minutes of shaking after reagent addition. Alkalinity above 250 mg/L or acidity above 150 mg/L as CaCO₃ requires the specified neutralization guidance to prevent partial or fading color.
Which photometers are documented for HI93718?
Both packs are documented for HI97718. The procedure and range on this page use HI97718 as the primary reference; follow the exact instrument method when using another model.
Which sample conditions should I check first?
Bromine, chlorine, oxidized chromium and manganese, and ozone may interfere. Hardness above 500 mg/L as CaCO₃ calls for approximately 2 minutes of shaking after reagent addition. Alkalinity above 250 mg/L or acidity above 150 mg/L as CaCO₃ can give partial or fading color; follow the manual’s neutralization guidance with diluted HCl or NaOH.
Are the instrument, cuvettes and CAL Check standards included?
No. These are reagent-only packs. Provide the photometer, cuvettes with stoppers and caps, and the method-required sampling and dispensing accessories separately. CAL Check standards are separate instrument-validation materials, not test reagents.
