APERA GROSTAR / GS1 / GEN II / AI101G
A focused pH pen for nutrient solutions and routine aqueous checks. GroStar GS1 Gen II pairs a replaceable double-junction glass probe with a clear calibration workflow and TruRead session statistics.
Choose GS1 when liquid pH is the job. It is not an EC/ppm pen or a direct-soil spear as supplied; those are different sensor choices.
±0.1 pH
pH accuracy
0.1 pH resolution; 0.0-14.0 pH range
GS1-E
Replaceable probe
Double-junction glass sensor
TruRead
Session statistics
Average, maximum and minimum
Choose by the measurement and the probes supplied. Each card opens that model’s product page; optional compatibility does not mean an extra probe comes in the box.
AI101G
Liquid pH
pH probe supplied; ORP head optional.
AI201G
Liquid pH + ORP kit
Two probes supplied; swap to read ORP.
AI102G
Moist soil/media pH
Spear, dibber and cleaning brush.
AI103G
Liquid EC / ppm
EC sensor supplied; no pH probe.
AI104G
Liquid pH + EC / ppm
Combo head supplied; ORP head optional.
AI204G
Combo + ORP kit
Combo and separate ORP heads supplied.
GS1 pen with GS1-E pH probe and cap, pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers (50 mL each), 3M KCl soaking solution (10 mL), four installed AAA batteries, lanyard and instructions.
The supplied-fluid list is separate from optional compatibility: pH 10.01 and any optional ORP head are separate.
WHAT THIS MODEL IS BUILT TO ANSWER
Keep pH checks distinct from EC/ppm checks. A pH reading answers an acidity question; it does not measure nutrient concentration.
Use a consistent sample, rinse routine and calibration sequence. TruRead helps summarize several stable readings instead of choosing one convenient result.
Use GS1’s supplied bulb probe for suitable liquids. Choose the GS2 spear configuration for direct moist-soil or growing-media work.
Supplied probe: GS1-E / AI801G. The base sensor is double-junction glass for liquid pH.
Replaceability gives the worn sensor a maintenance path; it is not an unlimited service-life guarantee. Install, condition and calibrate the correct head according to its instructions.
A SESSION SUMMARY, NOT A CLOUD LOGGER
In the documented Gen II TruRead workflow, a reading that has stayed stable for seven seconds is recorded for the session. Review the average, maximum and minimum after collecting your measurements. Seven seconds of stability is not the same as a fixed seven-second sampling interval.
6.2 pH
Illustrative minimum
6.3 pH
Illustrative average
6.4 pH
Illustrative maximum
The three illustrative values explain the summary; they do not prescribe a fixed sample count. The reviewed instructions do not establish retained history, timestamps or export. Use a suitable logger if those are requirements.
Start at pH 7.00, then complete pH 4.00 without switching off between points. The pen recognizes 1-3 points, but the manual calls for at least a two-point routine. pH 10.01 is a separate third-point buffer.
Rinse between standards and samples to limit carryover. Remove excess water and bubbles, then wait for stability.
Use fresh, correct standards. A calibration reminder or electrode-condition display supports the routine; it does not replace checking the method.
Watch the manufacturer’s family tutorial alongside the current Gen II manual. The video is a practical family reference, not proof that every photographed control or accessory is identical across revisions.
For daily or weekly pH use, keep the cap humid with a few droplets and tightly closed. For longer storage, follow the manual’s 3M KCl cap-fill routine. Rinse between samples; never store the glass probe immersed in tap, RO, distilled or deionized water.
Check fresh buffers, hydration and sample conditions before blaming the pen. A poorly buffered or low-ionic sample can take longer than a normal buffer.
It describes the pH electrode’s response after calibration, not battery charge or a guaranteed percentage of remaining life. Clean, condition and recalibrate as the manual directs.
The pH condition figure shown after calibration describes electrode response. It is not a battery indicator, soil-health score or guaranteed percentage of service life left. Use the manual’s cleaning, conditioning and calibration checks before deciding whether to replace the probe.
Calibration markers remind you about the routine. Their disappearance after the documented reminder period is not evidence that the pen has automatically erased calibration.
If the job is a cabled-probe water-testing workflow rather than a pocket grower pen, compare the alternatives below. These are separate instruments, not plug-in accessories or direct-soil replacements for GS1.

GS1 ships with a liquid pH bulb probe; GS2 ships with a soil/media spear, dibber and brush. Choose the sample-contact method first. Do not force GS1’s supplied bulb into soil.
The kit supplies GS1 with GS1-E, pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers, KCl soaking solution, four installed AAA batteries, lanyard and instructions. The text checklist defines supplies; outer packaging can vary.
GS1 measures 0.0-14.0 pH with 0.1 pH resolution and ±0.1 pH accuracy. Use it when that capability fits the procedure rather than assuming more displayed digits.
It measures pH and temperature with the supplied probe. No EC/ppm sensor or ORP probe is supplied in the base GS1 kit. GS5-E ORP capability requires the separate compatible probe; GS1-P is the pH-plus-ORP kit.
The Gen II manual describes readings collected after seven seconds of stability and session average, maximum and minimum. It does not establish persistent saved history, timestamps or export. Treat it as a session-summary tool, not a data logger.
pH 7.00 and 4.00 are supplied. Start at 7.00 and follow with 4.00 without powering off. pH 10.01 is separate for an appropriate third point; a recognized point is not automatically a supplied bottle.
It is pH electrode slope reported after calibration, not soil health, battery status or a remaining-life guarantee. Use the manual’s condition guidance and cleaning/recalibration steps.
Keep the pH glass hydrated under the model’s humid-cap or KCl storage instructions. Do not immerse-store in pure water. Use the exact GS1-E replacement, AI801G, when replacement is needed.
