Choose the output your soil method specifies

This VEE GEE hydrometer is manufactured to ASTM 151H specifications and reads the specific gravity of soil samples in suspension. It is the density-reading choice, not the grams-of-colloids scale associated with ASTM 152H. Match the ASTM number in your laboratory procedure before comparing length or appearance; the two soil instruments have different outputs even though they serve related sedimentation work.

Build the sedimentation setup around free flotation

The manufacturer describes use with a sedimentation cylinder. At approximately 11 inches (280 mm) long, the hydrometer needs suitable liquid depth and clearance from the wall and bottom. Use the cylinder and sample-preparation procedure specified by your method. Calibration is at 20°C (68°F), so temperature belongs in the measurement record rather than being inferred from the room thermostat.

Keep scale increments separate from method accuracy

The reading range is 0.995–1.038 with 0.001 subdivisions. Those subdivisions describe the printed scale; they are not a promise of the uncertainty of a complete soil test. The official brochure explains viewing the liquid surface at eye level and accounting for the meniscus when a suspension prevents a direct surface reading. Keep those reading conventions consistent with your own method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ASTM number is this?

ASTM 151H; catalog number 67151H.

Does it report grams of soil colloids?

No. This model reads specific gravity. A 152H-type soil-colloids scale is a different instrument.

What is the specific-gravity range?

0.995 to 1.038.

How fine are the scale divisions?

0.001 specific gravity; this is scale spacing, not complete-method uncertainty.

What is the calibration temperature?

20°C (68°F).

Is a sedimentation cylinder included?

The order is one hydrometer; select the cylinder required by your soil method separately.

How long is the instrument?

Approximately 11 inches (280 mm); allow space for free flotation.
