n-Octyl-β-D-maltoside (OM), >99%, Highly Purified

$585.00

    Catalog Number: B2025797 (1 g)

n-Octyl-β-D-maltoside (OM; Catalog #B2025797) is a highly purified (>99%) non-ionic alkyl maltoside detergent for solubilizing, purifying, and crystallizing membrane proteins. Its short octyl chain gives OM a high critical micelle concentration (roughly 20 mM), so it forms small micelles and is readily removed by dialysis, which makes it well suited to proteoliposome reconstitution and detergent exchange. Supplied as 1 g of powder. Custom bulk amounts of this product are available upon request.

Products are for in vitro research use only (RUO).

n-Octyl-β-D-maltoside (OM), >99%, Highly Purified – Catalog #B2025797

n-Octyl-β-D-maltoside (OM; Catalog #B2025797) is a non-ionic detergent consisting of a maltose head group linked to an eight-carbon alkyl chain. Supplied as 1 g of highly purified (>99%) powder, it is used to extract membrane proteins from lipid bilayers while preserving their native structure, and to maintain them in solution during purification, structural studies, and reconstitution.

Scientific Overview

Alkyl glycoside detergents were developed as gentle, non-ionic alternatives to ionic detergents for handling membrane proteins; the maltoside series came out of work to purify active, stable cytochrome c oxidase. Within the series, alkyl chain length sets the detergent's behavior. With a C8 chain, OM has a critical micelle concentration of roughly 20 mM, about one hundred times higher than n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside (DDM, ~0.17 mM). That high CMC means OM monomers are removed quickly by dialysis, which is why short-chain alkyl maltosides are used to reconstitute membrane proteins into lipid vesicles.

Key applications include:

  • Solubilization and purification of integral membrane proteins
  • Membrane protein crystallization and detergent screening
  • Detergent exchange from longer-chain maltosides
  • Reconstitution of membrane proteins into proteoliposomes by dialysis
  • Chiral surfactant in capillary electrophoresis

Usage & Handling Guidance

Store the powder tightly closed at room temperature. Prepare stock solutions (for example, 10% w/v) in ultrapure water or buffer; OM is freely soluble in water. For solubilization, work at concentrations well above the CMC, and optimize the detergent-to-protein and detergent-to-lipid ratio for each target.

  • Working range: Above ~20 mM (~1% w/v) for micelle formation; optimize for your protein.
  • Removal: The high CMC allows efficient removal by dialysis or dilution.
  • Solutions: Filter stock solutions and store at 2–8°C for short-term use.

What You Get

  • 1 g of n-octyl-β-D-maltoside as a powder
  • >99% purity for sensitive membrane protein work
  • Enough material for detergent screening and multiple preparations
  • For research use only (RUO)

Why Researchers Choose It

  • Non-ionic head group that is gentle on protein structure
  • High CMC for straightforward removal and reconstitution
  • Smaller micelles than long-chain maltosides such as DDM
  • High purity to minimize interference in structural and functional studies

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What is the CMC of n-octyl-β-D-maltoside?
Approximately 19.5–23.4 mM (about 0.9–1.1% w/v), depending on buffer and salt conditions.
  • How does OM compare with DDM?
Both are maltoside detergents. DDM has a C12 chain and a CMC near 0.17 mM, forming larger micelles that are hard to dialyze away. OM's C8 chain gives a far higher CMC and smaller micelles, so it is easier to remove but may be less stabilizing for some fragile proteins.
  • Can OM be removed by dialysis?
Yes. Its high CMC makes dialysis an effective removal method, which is useful for reconstituting proteins into liposomes.
  • How should I store it?
Keep the powder tightly closed at room temperature. Store prepared solutions at 2–8°C and use promptly.
  • Can I get a COA or SDS?
Request a quote or contact us and we will provide available lot documentation.
