The Hanna Instruments HI83414-01 is an advanced EPA compliant benchtop meter designed for comprehensive water quality analysis, expertly measuring both turbidity and chlorine with high accuracy. This versatile instrument combines a nephelometer and photometer, providing reliable and precise results essential for drinking water monitoring and regulatory compliance.
Turbidity is a crucial indicator of drinking water quality, significantly impacting both aesthetics and public health by signaling the potential presence of waterborne pathogens. In various applications, from assessing natural water sources for aquatic life compatibility to verifying wastewater treatment efficacy, controlling and monitoring turbidity remains paramount for regulatory compliance. This optical property, driven by suspended solids, describes how light is scattered and absorbed, with higher turbidity indicating greater light dispersion. Even the purest liquids exhibit some light scattering, meaning achieving absolute zero turbidity is practically impossible.
Drinking water treatment facilities utilizing surface water, such as lakes and rivers, are mandated by the EPA to continuously monitor and report turbidity levels. The EPA Method 180.1 establishes strict criteria for nephelometers and outlines specific reporting requirements, including an applicable range of 0-40 NTU, a tungsten lamp light source, a maximum 10 cm light path, and a 90° detector with a spectral peak response between 400 nm and 600 nm. The instrument must also possess the sensitivity to detect turbidity differences of 0.02 NTU or less in low turbidity waters.
The HI83414 turbidity and chlorine meter consistently meets and exceeds the rigorous performance criteria set forth by EPA Method 180.1 and Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater 2130 B, ensuring dependable and compliant water analysis.
The HI83414's advanced optical system precisely measures turbidity by analyzing how a light beam scatters and transmits through a sample. Light scattering is influenced by factors like wavelength, particle size, shape, refractive index, and color. The instrument incorporates a tungsten filament lamp, a 90° scattered light detector, and a 180° transmitted light detector to capture these critical interactions.
In ratio turbidimeter mode, the meter's microprocessor utilizes an effective algorithm to calculate the NTU value from both detectors. This intelligent processing corrects and compensates for color interference, while also minimizing the impact of lamp intensity fluctuations, thereby reducing the need for frequent calibration.
For non-ratio turbidity measurements, the NTU value is derived solely from the 90° scattered light detector. While this method offers excellent linearity in the low range, it is more susceptible to variations in lamp intensity. The HI83414's optical design significantly reduces stray light, which is crucial for determining the lower detection limit, enabling highly accurate results even for very low turbidity samples.
The HI98703-11 AMCO AEPA-1 primary turbidity standards are essential for ensuring measurement traceability. These high-quality standards are specifically used for the calibration and verification of your HI83414 turbidity meter, providing consistent and reliable performance.
The HI93414-11 free and total chlorine CAL Check™ standards are specifically designed for the calibration and performance verification of your HI83414 meter, ensuring reliable and accurate chlorine measurements.
