Two readings for calcium-chloride solutions

The 6611-3 combines a specific-gravity scale with a freezing-point scale for calcium-chloride solutions. Choose it when those two outputs match your procedure; a general density instrument does not automatically provide this solution-specific freezing-point scale. The 0.002 specific-gravity divisions and 5°F freezing-point divisions let you check the scale spacing before deciding whether it suits your recording requirement.

Plan the vessel and temperature together

The instrument is approximately 12 inches (305 mm) long. Allow enough vessel depth for it to float freely, and check the cylinder opening rather than choosing a vessel from nominal capacity alone. The manufacturer states calibration at 60°F (approximately 15°C). Record sample temperature alongside the reading and follow the correction procedure required by your method rather than treating a room-temperature reading as automatically corrected.

Read the liquid surface, not a guessed meniscus

The official hydrometer brochure describes bringing your eye level up until the liquid surface appears as a straight line and reading where it crosses the scale. For an opaque sample, use the method-specific meniscus correction. These handling steps help keep the chosen scale useful; they do not turn the instrument into a digital thermometer or a universal antifreeze tester.
