pH measurement is fundamental in food production, impacting flavor, texture, appearance, fermentation, and shelf stability. Foods are categorized into acid foods (pH 4.6 or below) and low-acid foods (pH greater than 4.6 with water activity above 0.85). Low-acid foods can be acidified to a lower pH to prevent bacterial growth.

Measuring pH in food presents challenges due to solid, semi-solid, or slurry consistencies that can coat the glass membrane or clog the reference junction. The HI98161 includes the FC2023 electrode, specifically designed for food pH analysis. It features a conical tip for easy penetration, an open junction to resist clogging, and a food-grade Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) body. PVDF is resistant to most chemicals, solvents (including sodium hypochlorite), abrasion, mechanical stress, UV and nuclear radiation, and fungal growth. The FC2023 connects to the HI98161 with a secure, waterproof DIN connector.

FSMA Compliant

This pH meter meets the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) compliance standards.

The FC2023 electrode is ideal for measuring the pH of a wide range of food products, including milk, yogurt, meats, cheeses, fruits, sushi, rice, jams, jellies, dough, and ice cream.

Conical Glass Tip

The conical tip design allows for easy penetration into solids, semi-solids, and emulsions, enabling direct pH measurement in diverse food products like meat, cheese, yogurt, and milk.

Open Junction Reference

Featuring an open junction with a solid viscolene gel interface between the sample and internal Ag/AgCl reference, this design prevents silver contamination and clogging, ensuring fast, stable readings.

PVDF Body

The PVDF body, a food-grade plastic, offers exceptional resistance to most chemicals and solvents, including sodium hypochlorite. It also provides high abrasion resistance, mechanical strength, resistance to UV and nuclear radiation, and inhibits fungal growth.

Beyond its specialized foodcare pH electrode, the HI98161 features Hanna's unique CAL Check™ system. This system alerts users to potential calibration issues, crucial in food processing where solid coatings on the probe can lead to inaccuracies. By comparing current and previous calibration data, the meter provides on-screen prompts indicating the need for probe cleaning, replacement, or possible buffer contamination. Post-calibration, the electrode's overall condition is displayed as a percentage (0-100% in 10% increments), reflecting its offset and slope characteristics, both available in GLP data.

In measurement mode, pressing the "AutoHold" virtual key freezes and automatically logs a stable reading. An optional "out of calibration range" warning can be enabled to notify users if a reading falls outside the calibrated pH values.

The log-on-demand mode allows saving up to 200 samples. This logged data, along with associated GLP information, can be recalled or transferred to a PC using Hanna's HI920015 micro USB cable and HI92000 software, ensuring traceability for specific product batches. GLP data includes date, time, calibration buffers, offset, and slope, directly accessible via the dedicated GLP key.

A context-sensitive help menu, relevant to the current screen, is accessible at any time with a dedicated button.

The high-contrast graphic LCD screen provides excellent visibility in both bright sunlight and low-lit areas, enhanced by an adjustable backlight. A combination of dedicated and virtual keys ensures intuitive meter operation with multiple language options.

The compact, durable HI720161 carrying case is thermoformed to securely hold all necessary components for field measurements, including the meter, electrode, beakers, buffer solutions, and cleaning solutions.

Shipping Policy

All orders are shipped via FedEx from Hanna Instruments' fulfillment center in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
FedEx Ground is the standard method; expedited options (2-Day, Overnight) are available for an additional cost.
Hanna Instruments only ships to residential or business addresses within the United States (no PO Boxes).
Orders placed after business hours, weekends, or holidays will ship the next business day, pending product and carrier availability.
Shipping timelines may vary depending on product availability, order size, and carrier logistics.
Blue Tiger Scientific and Hanna Instruments are not responsible for carrier delays, weather-related disruptions, or other unforeseen delivery issues once the order has shipped.

Return Policy

All return requests must be coordinated directly with Blue Tiger Scientific before a product is sent back.
Products must have a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number issued by Blue Tiger Scientific before being returned.
Products must be returned in new or like-new condition, with the original packaging and proof of purchase (such as an invoice or packing slip).
Customers are responsible for return shipping costs unless otherwise stated.
Unauthorized returns (without an RMA) will be refused and returned at the customer's expense.

Warranty Policy
