The Hanna Instruments HI88703 Precision Turbidity Benchtop Meter delivers exceptionally accurate and reliable turbidity measurements, particularly in the critical low-turbidity range. Engineered with a cutting-edge optical system, this instrument ensures long-term stability, minimizes stray light interference, and effectively compensates for color in your samples. Routine calibration using the provided standards keeps the tungsten lamp intensity consistent, while the specialized 25 mm round cuvettes made of optical glass guarantee highly repeatable turbidity results.

Key Features:

  • Dual Measurement Modes: The HI88703 offers both ratio and non-ratio turbidity measurement options. Utilize the ratio mode for a broad range of 0.00 to 4000 NTU, or select the non-ratio mode for precise readings within the 0.00 to 40.0 NTU range.
  • Versatile Turbidity Units: Display turbidity results in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), European Brewing Convention units (EBC), or Nephelos units, providing flexibility for diverse applications.
  • EPA Compliant: This meter meets and surpasses the stringent requirements of EPA and Standard Methods for turbidity measurements. When operating in EPA mode, all turbidity readings are automatically rounded to fulfill regulatory reporting guidelines.
  • Advanced Calibration: The powerful calibration function of the HI88703 effectively compensates for lamp aging and intensity changes. Perform a two, three, four, or five-point turbidity calibration with the included standards (<0.10, 15.0, 100, 750, and 2000 NTU), or customize calibration points using your own prepared standards.
  • AMCO AEPA-1 Primary Turbidity Standard: The included AMCO AEPA-1 standards are recognized by the USEPA as primary reference materials. These non-toxic, highly stable standards consist of uniform styrene divinylbenzene polymer spheres, offering consistent and reusable performance with a long shelf life.
  • GLP Data Management: Comprehensive Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) functions allow for full traceability of calibration conditions, including detailed logs of calibration points, dates, and times.
  • Data Logging: Store up to 200 measurements in the internal memory for easy recall and review at any time.
  • Effortless Data Transfer: Download logged data to a Windows-compatible PC via the USB port and the HI92000 software for convenient storage and in-depth analysis.
  • Intuitive Tutorial Mode: The unique tutorial mode enhances user experience by providing on-screen explanations and confirmation prompts for various operations and preparations.
  • Contextual Help: A dedicated HELP button offers instant access to clear, on-screen tutorial messages and directions, guiding users quickly and easily through setup and calibration based on the currently viewed setting or option.
  • Backlit Graphic LCD: The clear, backlit graphic LCD display offers a user-friendly interface with easy-to-read plain text messages for optimal comprehension.

Turbidity is a critical parameter for evaluating drinking water quality. While historically considered an aesthetic concern, substantial evidence now confirms that effective turbidity control acts as a robust safeguard against waterborne pathogens. In natural environments, turbidity measurements are essential for assessing general water quality and its suitability for aquatic life. Furthermore, monitoring turbidity is vital in wastewater treatment processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Turbidity is an optical property that describes how light is scattered and absorbed rather than transmitted through a liquid, primarily due to suspended solids. Higher turbidity indicates greater light dispersion, and even the purest liquids will exhibit some degree of light scattering, meaning achieving absolute zero turbidity is practically impossible.

Drinking water treatment facilities that draw water from surface sources like lakes and rivers are mandated by the EPA to continuously monitor and report turbidity levels. EPA Method 180.1 sets forth specific requirements for nephelometers and outlines reporting protocols, including an applicable range of 0-40 NTU, a tungsten lamp light source operating between 2200-3000°K, a maximum light path of 10 cm, and a 90° detector with a spectral peak response between 400 nm and 600 nm. The instrument must also be sensitive enough to detect turbidity differences of 0.02 NTU or less in low turbidity waters.

Reporting Requirements According to EPA Method 180.1:

NTU reading Rounded to nearest
0.0 - 1.0 0.05
1 - 10 0.1
10 - 40 1
40 - 100 5
100 - 400 10
400 - 1000 50
> 1000 100

Principle of Operation

The HI88703's optical system accurately measures turbidity by analyzing how a light beam is scattered and transmitted through a sample. Factors like the wavelength of incident light, particle size and shape, refractive index, and color all influence the intensity and pattern of scattered light. This advanced instrument features a tungsten filament lamp, a 90° scattered light detector, and a 180° transmitted light detector to precisely capture these critical interactions.

In ratio turbidimeter mode, the meter's microprocessor employs an intelligent algorithm to calculate the NTU value from the signals received by both detectors. This sophisticated processing corrects for and compensates against color interference, while also minimizing the impact of lamp intensity fluctuations, thus reducing the need for frequent calibration.

For non-ratio turbidity measurements, the NTU value is derived solely from the 90° scattered light detector. While this method offers excellent linearity in the low range, it is more susceptible to variations in lamp intensity. The HI88703's optical design significantly reduces stray light, which is crucial for determining the lower detection limit, enabling highly accurate results even for very low turbidity samples.

AMCO AEPA-1 Turbidity Standards for HI88703

The HI88703-11 AMCO AEPA-1 primary turbidity standards are fundamental for ensuring measurement traceability. These high-quality standards are specifically used for the calibration and verification of your HI88703 turbidity meter, delivering consistent and reliable performance.
