The HI1048B pH electrode for wine and juice features general purpose (GP) glass, a spherical bulb, durable glass body, innovative CPS™ sleeve junction, double junction reference, and refillable 3.5M KCl electrolyte. This combination makes it exceptionally suited for measuring pH in high-solids samples such as wine must, fruit juice, suspensions, and other viscous matrices that typically challenge standard electrodes.


General Purpose Glass Formulation

General purpose (GP) glass provides a versatile and reliable sensing membrane ideal for routine pH measurement across a broad range of applications. Exhibiting approximately 100 megaohms resistance at 25°C, it performs optimally at ambient conditions. The HI1048B effectively measures samples with temperatures ranging from -5 to 60°C (23 to 140°F), covering typical wine and juice processing environments.

The spherical bulb design maximizes surface contact with the sample, enabling faster electrode response and superior stability—critical advantages when monitoring pH in wine must and fruit juices where rapid, accurate readings support quality control decisions.

CPS™ Sleeve Junction

Clogging Prevention System (CPS™) represents a breakthrough for pH electrodes used in high-solids samples. By pairing ground glass porosity with a PTFE sleeve, it maintains consistent electrolyte flow while repelling particulates and debris. This innovative junction design allows the HI1048B to resist fouling up to 20 times longer than conventional ceramic junctions, dramatically reducing maintenance and extending operational life in challenging wine and juice matrices.

Double Junction Reference

The double junction construction features an internal compartment that isolates the Ag/AgCl reference wire, preventing silver ion migration into the sample. This proves essential in applications containing sulfides or where silver precipitation could otherwise block the junction, ensuring stable, drift-free pH readings over extended use.

Refillable Design

As a refillable double junction pH electrode, the HI1048B utilizes silver-free HI7082 3.5M KCl electrolyte. Users can easily replenish or replace the fill solution if contamination occurs, providing flexibility and prolonged service life across multiple testing cycles.

Glass Body Construction

The robust glass body resists aggressive chemicals, facilitates easy cleaning, and enables rapid thermal equilibration with the internal reference electrolyte. Faster temperature stabilization translates to more consistent reference potential and dependable pH measurements in varying lab conditions.

BNC Connector

Equipped with a universal BNC connector, the HI1048B connects seamlessly to any pH meter with a female BNC input, eliminating the need for proprietary adapters and ensuring broad compatibility across instrumentation brands.

Single Junction Versus Double Junction pH Electrodes

Traditional single junction electrodes have only one barrier between the internal reference wire and external sample. Under challenging conditions—high pressure, extreme temperatures, strongly acidic or alkaline solutions—the electrolyte flow can reverse, allowing sample ingress that contaminates the reference and leads to complete failure.

Silver chloride precipitation poses another common issue, particularly in samples containing Tris buffers or heavy metals. When AgCl forms on the junction face, it causes blocked flow and erratic, drifting readings.

Hanna’s double junction system adds an intermediate compartment that physically separates the reference from potential contaminants. The silver-free outer electrolyte eliminates precipitate formation, significantly reducing clogging risk and delivering far more reliable, stable performance—even in the most demanding wine, juice, and high-solids applications.

    • All orders are shipped via FedEx from Hanna Instruments' fulfillment center in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
    • FedEx Ground is the standard method; expedited options (2-Day, Overnight) are available for an additional cost.
    • Hanna Instruments only ships to residential or business addresses within the United States (no PO Boxes).
    • Orders placed after business hours, weekends, or holidays will ship the next business day, pending product and carrier availability.
    • Shipping timelines may vary depending on product availability, order size, and carrier logistics.
    • Blue Tiger Scientific and Hanna Instruments are not responsible for carrier delays, weather-related disruptions, or other unforeseen delivery issues once the order has shipped.

    Return Policy

    • All return requests must be coordinated directly with Blue Tiger Scientific before a product is sent back.
    • Products must have a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number issued by Blue Tiger Scientific before being returned.
    • Products must be returned in new or like-new condition, with the original packaging and proof of purchase (such as an invoice or packing slip).
      Customers are responsible for return shipping costs unless otherwise stated.
    • Unauthorized returns (without an RMA) will be refused and returned at the customer's expense.
      Returns are subject to inspection and approval. Products not in acceptable condition may be denied credit.
    • Some products, such as custom-built, special order, and hazardous materials, may not be eligible for return.

    Warranty Policy

    • Hanna Instruments' products are covered by their Limited Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.
    • All warranty claims and services are handled directly by Hanna Instruments.
    • Warranty periods vary by product. If unspecified, the standard warranty term is 18 months from the Hanna Instruments factory ship date.
    • If you experience an issue believed to be covered under warranty, please contact Hanna Instruments for guidance on how to submit your warranty request to Hanna Instruments.
    • Customers must follow Hanna Instruments' warranty submission process, including providing a claim number, product model and serial number, and a detailed description of the issue.
    • Hanna Instruments will determine whether products are repaired, replaced, or otherwise serviced under warranty.
    • Note: Warranty coverage does not apply to damage caused by misuse, accidents, unauthorized repairs, or improper storage and handling.
