APERA GROSTAR / GS2 / GEN II / AI102G
A soil/media pH pen is a sampling tool, not a drilling stake. GS2 Gen II combines a replaceable spear-glass electrode, soil-oriented PTFE junction, dibber and brush with TruRead summaries for measurements at multiple locations.
Choose GS2 for direct moist-soil or growing-media pH, or its separately prepared slurry method. Start with moisture and a pre-formed path so the sample reaches the sensor without forcing the glass.

A soil spear is still glass. For direct testing, the manual requires wet soil and a dibber-made pathway. Take several measurements at comparable depth and angle instead of selecting the single most convenient result.
Remove the surface layer as the method directs. If dry, add suitable water and allow equilibration; the manual ideally waits 24 hours.
Use the dibber before the glass. Do not drill or force the sensor through hard particles.
Insert gently into the prepared path, wait for stability and repeat at comparable locations.
Remove soil from the PTFE ring without rubbing the spear, then return it to KCl storage.
Apera’s field method describes about 5 cm of surface removal and a 10-15 cm pathway. Follow the full method and adapt safely to the actual bed or container; do not assume those depths fit every pot.
Keep moisture, depth, angle and locations comparable. The dibber protects the glass and establishes the pathway.
Apera’s full method mixes 20 g soil with 100 g distilled/DI water, agitates, rests overnight, remixes and settles before testing.
Do not substitute a quick 1:1 mix or compare direct and slurry values as though their preparation were identical. The Gen II manual contains the full collection, drying, mixing and settling procedure.
GS2 pen with GS2-E spear probe and cap, pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers (50 mL each), 3M KCl soaking solution (10 mL), dibber, probe-cleaning brush, four installed AAA batteries, lanyard and instructions.
The supplied-fluid list is separate from optional compatibility: pH 10.01 and any optional ORP head are separate.
WHAT THIS MODEL IS BUILT TO ANSWER
Make a path with the dibber before inserting the rinsed spear. Use comparable depth and angle across locations; dry, stony or hard material is not a place to force glass.
Choose an appropriate prepared-moist-media procedure. Keep moisture and sampling method consistent before comparing values between pots or locations.
Apera describes a 1:5 soil-to-water method by mass with overnight preparation. It is not the same procedure as direct insertion, and the results should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.
Supplied probe: GS2-E / AI802G. This is the soil/media spear with a PTFE ring junction, not the general liquid-pH bulb.
Replaceability gives the worn sensor a maintenance path; it is not an unlimited service-life guarantee. Install, condition and calibrate the correct head according to its instructions.
A SESSION SUMMARY, NOT A CLOUD LOGGER
In the documented Gen II TruRead workflow, a reading that has stayed stable for seven seconds is recorded for the session. Review the average, maximum and minimum after collecting your measurements. Seven seconds of stability is not the same as a fixed seven-second sampling interval.
6.2 pH
Illustrative minimum
6.3 pH
Illustrative average
6.4 pH
Illustrative maximum
The three illustrative values explain the summary; they do not prescribe a fixed sample count. The reviewed instructions do not establish retained history, timestamps or export. Use a suitable logger if those are requirements.
Complete pH 7.00 then 4.00 calibration before soil work, without switching off between the points. Calibrate in clean buffers, not in the soil or in a fertilizer solution. pH 10.01 is a separate optional point.
Rinse between standards and samples to limit carryover. Remove excess water and bubbles, then wait for stability.
Use fresh, correct standards. A calibration reminder or electrode-condition display supports the routine; it does not replace checking the method.
Watch the manufacturer’s family tutorial alongside the current Gen II manual. The video is a practical family reference, not proof that every photographed control or accessory is identical across revisions.
Apera soil-measurement demonstration. Follow the current GS2 Gen II manual for the full method.
Keep the GS2 spear in 3M KCl whenever it is not in use, with the cap about one-third full and tightened. Rinse after sampling and remove soil from the white PTFE ring with the brush in water. Do not rub or wipe the blue glass spear.
Check sample moisture and preparation first. Wet the soil as the manual directs and allow equilibration instead of pressing the glass harder.
Remove particles from the white PTFE ring without rubbing the spear. Slight brown coloration alone is not proof that the sensor has failed; follow cleaning and calibration checks.
The pH condition figure shown after calibration describes electrode response. It is not a battery indicator, soil-health score or guaranteed percentage of service life left. Use the manual’s cleaning, conditioning and calibration checks before deciding whether to replace the probe.
Calibration markers remind you about the routine. Their disappearance after the documented reminder period is not evidence that the pen has automatically erased calibration.
If the job is a cabled-probe water-testing workflow rather than a pocket grower pen, compare the alternatives below. These are separate instruments, not plug-in accessories or direct-soil replacements for GS2.

No. The soil must be wet, and the dibber prepares the pathway. The tip is glass, even though it is designed for soil work. Do not use the probe to drill through dry, hard or stony material.
The kit includes GS2 with GS2-E spear probe, pH 4.00 and 7.00 buffers, KCl soaking solution, dibber, cleaning brush, four installed AAA batteries, lanyard and instructions.
The manual removes about 5 cm of top soil, requires wet soil and uses a dibber-made path before gentle insertion. It calls for multiple consistent locations. Follow the full method and adapt depth safely to the actual bed or container.
The manual combines 20 g soil with 100 g distilled/DI water, mixes, rests overnight and then remixes/settles before measurement. It is a distinct preparation method, not an unsourced quick 1:1 mix or a direct-reading equivalent.
It records after a reading has stayed stable for seven seconds, then reports session average, maximum and minimum. Several comparable locations are more informative than a cherry-picked reading. No permanent logging/export feature is established.
The supplied GS2-E is a pH spear, not an EC or nutrient-identification sensor. A pH result alone does not quantify fertility or establish a fertilizer dose.
Rinse after tests, brush particles from the white PTFE ring without rubbing the blue glass, and keep the spear in 3M KCl when not used. Never leave it stored in tap, RO, distilled or DI water.
Yes. The model-specific replacement is GS2-E, catalog AI802G. Follow the correct conditioning and calibration instructions; replaceability does not make the glass tip unbreakable.
